Airlie Beach is a small town nobody drives through without stopping, because this is where you board the boats out to the 74 Whitsunday Islands and to Whitehaven Beach, home to some of the finest white sand on the planet. Soft sea breezes, warm water and blue skies all year round make this a paradise for divers, sailors, and anyone who wants to lie on the sand without a shred of guilt.
#1 Whitehaven Beach (the whitest sand in the world) · Whitehaven Beach
A beach ranked the best in Australia and among the best in the world for years running. The sand here is 98% pure silica, which doesn't hold heat and doesn't stick to your skin, so you can walk barefoot across it in comfort. It runs 7 kilometres end to end with no shops or buildings of any kind. The island is a national park with tightly controlled access, which keeps the nature astonishingly untouched.
- Book a speedboat or sailing trip at least 2-3 days ahead, especially over Australian holidays, when seats fill up fast.
- Walk up to the Hill Inlet Lookout, about 10 minutes, to watch the sand and tide swirl into beautiful blue-and-white patterns.
- There are no facilities on the beach, so bring drinking water, food and sunscreen with you.
#2 Whitsunday Islands (sailing trips) · Whitsunday Islands Sailing
Sailing among the 74 islands strung across the Coral Sea is the experience that made Airlie Beach famous worldwide. Popular trips range from half-day and full-day outings to 3-night cruises that sleep aboard the yacht. Some islands have calm bays for snorkelling and seasonal whale-shark sightings. Routes pass Hill Inlet and Blue Pearl Bay, where the colour of the water keeps shifting with the angle of the light.
- A 2-day, 1-night trip aboard a yacht is the sweet spot for first-time sailors: you see several islands without sleeping on board for nights on end.
- Choose a catamaran (twin hull) if you get seasick easily; it's far steadier than a single-hull yacht.
- Check the jellyfish season before snorkelling; from November to March you'll need to wear a stinger suit.
#3 Airlie Beach Lagoon (a seawater pool in the town centre) · Airlie Beach Lagoon
A large, free seaside swimming pool open to everyone all day long. It was built so visitors can swim safely during jellyfish season, with the pool water filtered and well managed. The surrounding park is for lounging, barbecues and watching the sunset, and it's the evening meeting point for visitors and locals alike. It's a 5-minute walk from the restaurants and bars in town.
- Free entry 24 hours a day, with lighting and security at night, so it's safe for families.
- The public barbecues in the park are free to use; come a little early to claim a spot for the evening.
- It's the best sunset spot in Airlie Beach, with the orange light reflecting off the water beautifully.
#4 Great Barrier Reef (reef snorkelling) · Great Barrier Reef Snorkelling
The stretch of the Great Barrier Reef reachable from Airlie Beach is still rich and fairly far from the crowds. The coral here keeps its bright colour and high diversity, and clownfish, sea turtles, reef sharks and parrotfish are common sights. Most snorkelling and scuba trips from Airlie Beach head to Bait Reef and Hardy Reef, where underwater visibility is excellent.
- Diving trips run a full day, 7:00 am-5:00 pm; bring seasickness tablets if you're not used to it, as the swells on the offshore route can be strong.
- Choose a trip that includes both snorkelling gear and basic scuba in one price; it's better value than renting separately.
- Manta ray season is June-July, so if you come then, ask the crew to take you to the spots where you're likely to see them.
#5 Hamilton Island (resorts and panoramic views) · Hamilton Island
The most developed island in the Whitsundays and a favourite for families and couples. It has a small airport taking direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne, and full facilities, from 5-star resorts and restaurants to golf and tennis courts. The One Tree Hill lookout gives a 360-degree view of the beautiful islands and is one of the best sunset spots in Australia.
- Renting a golf buggy is the only way to get around the island in a single day; there are no private cars on the island.
- The One Tree Hill Lookout is a 15-minute walk up, and watching the sunset here is one of the best experiences in the Whitsundays.
- You can visit on a day trip from Airlie Beach with no need to stay overnight; ferries run several times a day.
#6 Conway National Park (rainforest walks with sea views) · Conway National Park
The national park that wraps around Airlie Beach and connects directly by sea to the Whitsundays. The walking trails run through humid tropical rainforest rich with brightly coloured birds, wallabies, large skinks and ancient trees. The Coral Beach Lookout gives a lovely view of the islands without getting on a boat, ideal for anyone who wants a break from the sea and some nature on land.
- The Whitsunday Great Walk runs 30 km for hikers who want 2-3 days, with campsites for overnight stays.
- Bring enough drinking water; there's none along the way, and the air is humid and hot even in the shade of the forest.
- Around the bird breeding season, roughly July-August, you may spot the rare bright-purple Wompoo Fruit Dove.

Before You Pack
Airlie Beach is at its best from April to November, when the weather is dry and comfortable and the water is clear. Avoid December to March, when there are box jellyfish in the shallows. Plan at least 3-4 days so you can get out on the water for at least one island trip.
