Where to stay in Beppu — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Beppu is the onsen capital of Japan, on the island of Kyushu, with more hot-spring water than anywhere else in the country, sending steam billowing across the whole city. The highlights are the "hells" (jigoku meguri), hot-spring ponds in vivid blues, reds and greys, alongside sand baths and mud baths. Nearby is Yufuin, a chic, charming little onsen town.
Why stay in Beppu
The most onsen
The largest volume of hot-spring water in Japan, with many kinds to soak in: clear water, mud and sand.
Colourful hells
A tour of the "hells" to see deep blue, blood-red and bubbling mud springs, for viewing, not bathing.
Unusual onsen
Sand baths where you get buried, and rare steam baths (mushiyu).
Pair it with Yufuin
A chic onsen town in the valley, with a craft-and-cafe street and views of Mount Yufu, about 50 minutes from Beppu.
