Fenghuang Ancient Town (凤凰古城) sits in western Hunan Province and is one of China's most beautiful old towns, with more than 300 years of history dating back to the Qing dynasty. It's the homeland of the Miao and Tujia peoples, where over 26 ethnic groups live side by side. The town is famous for its Diaojiaolou stilted houses that mirror the water after dark, giving you a scene that looks like a painting — the kind of place that puts Fenghuang on the once-in-a-lifetime list for travelers from around the world.
#1 Fenghuang Ancient Town (Historic Core) · Fenghuang Ancient Town (Historic Core)
Fenghuang Ancient Town has earned the nickname 'China's most beautiful town.' Its stone-paved streets are still in good shape, with Ming and Qing dynasty wooden buildings lining both sides. The central district is made up of Zhengying Lane and Zhongying Lane, packed with shops, riverside cafés, and Miao folk art. After dark, lantern light reflecting on the Tuojiang River turns the whole scene into something like a painting.
- The ancient-town admission (combo ticket) runs about 148 yuan and covers several of the main sights
- Before 9 a.m. the crowds are still thin, so you can wander the old lanes in quiet
- Evening into night is the best time — the lights and folk music are everywhere
#2 Tuojiang River Boat Ride · Tuojiang River Boat Ride
The Tuojiang River is the heart of Fenghuang Ancient Town. Taking a wooden boat to see the town from the water is the best way to take in the beauty of the Diaojiaolou houses and the old bridges lined up along both banks. The traditional rowboats pass under the Rainbow Bridge and ancient stone bridges, opening up angles you can't see from land — especially at sunset and at night, when both banks are lit up.
- A boat costs about 80–100 yuan per boat; you can negotiate before you get on
- An evening cruise (after 7 p.m.) is the most memorable — the colored lights are gorgeous
- Wear a warm jacket in autumn and winter; it's much colder on the water than on land
#3 Hong Bridge (Rainbow Bridge) · Hong Bridge (Rainbow Bridge)
Hong Bridge, or Hongqiao (虹桥), is the most striking symbol of Fenghuang Ancient Town. First built in 1368 during the Ming dynasty, it carries a two-story wooden tower on top known as the 'Wind and Rain Tower,' which houses shops and a teahouse. The bridge is made of local red stone, runs 112 meters long, and crosses the water in three arches. The view from here looking down over the Tuojiang River and the Diaojiaolou houses is the prettiest in town.
- The best photo angle is from the riverbank below, looking up at the bridge, especially after dark
- Climb up to the tower for a panoramic view of the town; the upper floor has a teahouse where you can rest
- During Chinese festivals, there are music performances and folk shows on the bridge
#4 Diaojiaolou Stilted Houses · Diaojiaolou Stilted Houses
Diaojiaolou (吊脚楼) are the traditional stilted houses of the Miao and Tujia peoples, with wooden posts driven down into the Tuojiang River and eaves jutting out over the water. These houses are 200–300 years old, built entirely of wood without a single nail. Many have now been converted into boutique stays and restaurants. Walking along the river in the evening gives you a special reflection of the wooden houses and golden light on the water.
- The most complete cluster of Diaojiaolou houses is on the north bank of the river; follow the riverside road
- Some houses are open to visit inside, showing the traditional Miao décor
- Photographers suggest coming before dawn or after dark for the best light
#5 North Gate Tower (Bihui Gate) · North Gate Tower (Bihui Gate)
The North Gate Tower, or 'Bihui Gate' (碧辉门), was first built in 1556 during the Ming dynasty, made of tough, durable local purple and red stone. It was rebuilt in 1715 and remains in good condition today. The tower stands across from the Diaojiaolou houses, and you can climb up for a view of the ancient town and the river.
- Admission is included in the ancient-town ticket — no extra charge
- There's a stone staircase down to the water in front of the tower, a very popular photo spot
- In the evening, the golden light on the old stone makes the tower look especially beautiful
#6 Shen Congwen Former Residence · Shen Congwen Former Residence
The former residence of Shen Congwen (沈从文故居), the great Chinese writer who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature twice and came close to being the first Chinese person to win it in 1988. The house was built in 1866 by his grandfather in Qing dynasty style, covering around 400 square meters. Inside, old photographs and personal belongings are on display, and the stone inscription over his grave is not far from the house.
- Admission is included in the ancient-town ticket; open daily 8 a.m.–6 p.m.
- Read his book 'Border Town' before you visit and you'll understand Fenghuang's charm much better
- The inscription on his grave reads: 'I understand nature, I understand people, but I don't understand myself'
#7 Miao Ethnic Villages · Miao Ethnic Villages
Around Fenghuang are several Miao villages that have kept their traditional way of life and culture well preserved. The Miao are known for their embroidery with silver threads and traditional patterns. The 'Flower Jumping Festival' (跳花节) on the 8th day of the 4th lunar month is a big event where the Miao gather to celebrate, with elaborate traditional costumes, bamboo-pipe music, and dancing.
- Hire a local guide to take you to villages outside town for a more genuine experience than in town
- Buy Miao embroidery directly from the villages — it's much cheaper than in the town markets
- Ask the guide first which villages are still real communities, not just performance-style tourist sites

Before You Pack
Fenghuang is best for a 2–3 night stay, so you can soak up the evening atmosphere of the lights along the river and the local life that still holds genuine charm. We'd suggest exploring the side lanes along Zhengying Lane and Zhongying Lane on foot in the morning, before the tourists pack in.
