Guangzhou is a city that blends the heritage of old Canton with the restless energy of a megacity that never quite slows down. For centuries it was China's single most important trading hub, and traces of the Canton Trade System are still everywhere — in the colonial buildings on Shamian Island, in the legend of the five rams at Yuexiu Park, and in the intricate carvings of the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall. Today Guangzhou holds its own as a leading megacity in China, grown up around the Canton Tower and a sharply modern new district, alongside traditional shopping streets that stay busy 24 hours a day.

Locals affectionately call it the "slim waist." There's a bubble lift running up the outside of the tower, plus the Sky Drop for anyone who likes a thrill.

Before You Pack

Guangzhou is a city where every corner has a story waiting to be told — these 8 places are just an opening chapter in discovering the Canton culture that's still very much alive in this great city of southern China.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit Guangzhou?
Spring (March–April) and autumn (October–November) are the best times — the weather is pleasant and cool, not too hot and humid. Summer (May–September) is very hot and humid, with frequent rain. Winter (December–February) is much milder than northern China, with temperatures around 12–18 degrees.
How easy is it to get around Guangzhou?
Guangzhou has 16 metro lines (Guangzhou Metro) covering almost all the major sights. We recommend using the Alipay or WeChat Pay app to scan a QR code for tickets — quick and convenient. Taxis and Didi (China's Grab) are also easy to use if you're travelling as a group.
What should travellers prepare before visiting Guangzhou?
You should set up WeChat Pay and Alipay before you travel (you can link a foreign credit card), because shops and public transport in China barely take cash anymore. Install a VPN before you go if you want to use Google Maps or Instagram, since they're blocked in China — we recommend using Baidu Maps instead.
