Hamilton Island is more than a resort — it's the launch point for an adventure into one of the most beautiful marine ecosystems on Earth. Whitehaven Beach has the purest, whitest silica sand in Australia, while Heart Reef, the heart-shaped coral seen from a helicopter, is an image you'll remember for life. You can arrive by plane from Proserpine or by ferry from Airlie Beach. Resort rates run high, but everything you'll see on this island is worth every dollar.
#1 Whitehaven Beach · Whitehaven Beach
A beach voted one of the most beautiful in the world time and time again. The pure white sand is 98% silica, so it stays cool underfoot even in the blazing sun, and it runs 7 kilometres along the east coast of Whitsunday Island. The water is so clear you can see the sandy bottom from the surface, and the currents that shift with the tides create sand patterns that change every hour — even more striking when viewed from the Hill Inlet lookout above.
- Go with a fast-boat tour from Hamilton Island marina — it takes 30-45 minutes and costs around AUD 180-220 per person, lunch included.
- The silica sand is cooler than ordinary sand, but the Australian sun is intense — wear SPF 50+ sunscreen and a hat every time.
- At low tide, roughly 10am-2pm, the sand patterns are at their most beautiful — ask your guide what time low tide falls that day.
#2 Hill Inlet Lookout · Hill Inlet Lookout
The most iconic lookout in the Whitsundays. A short 500-metre climb from Whitehaven Beach brings you above the Hill Inlet channel, where deep blue and pale turquoise water swirl over white sand to form patterns that shift constantly with the current. The result is one of the most beautiful sea views in Australia. The trail isn't difficult but it's fairly steep — figure 20-30 minutes up and back.
- Follow the signs from the northern end of Whitehaven Beach upward — sports shoes are a big help on the damp dirt trail.
- The best photos come at low tide, when the sand and water patterns are sharpest — check the tidal chart before you plan.
- The lookout gets crowded between 10am and 1pm — if you're on a boat tour, ask your guide to take you up before or after the big groups.
#3 Heart Reef — the heart-shaped coral · Heart Reef
One of the most famous images of Australia: coral that has grown naturally into a perfect heart shape in the middle of the ocean. You can only see it clearly from the air, because Heart Reef is a protected area where diving and boat landings aren't allowed. To see it, you take a seaplane or helicopter tour from Hamilton Island, circling overhead to photograph it from above — an expensive experience, but one you can't find anywhere else on Earth.
- A seaplane tour to Heart Reef costs AUD 350-500 per person and takes 30-45 minutes — book ahead through the island's activity centre.
- Helicopters cost more than seaplanes but give a better vantage and seat fewer people — book before you travel.
- Diving at Heart Reef is strictly prohibited — it's a legally protected area, and violations carry heavy penalties.
#4 One Tree Hill sunset point · One Tree Hill
The best sunset spot on Hamilton Island. A short 2-kilometre walk from the island takes about 20-25 minutes, and the summit has a 360-degree lookout over the Whitsundays in every direction. At sunset, gold and orange light washes the sky and reflects off the sea — the moment when visitors from across the island gather. Arrive at least 30 minutes before sunset to claim your view.
- The trail up is clearly signposted — start near the Resort Centre and follow the dirt path uphill.
- Sunset falls between 5.30pm and 6.30pm depending on the season — ask at reception what time the sun goes down that day.
- The trail has no lighting and is hard to descend after dark — bring a flashlight or use your phone light.
#5 Great Barrier Reef diving and snorkelling · Great Barrier Reef Diving and Snorkelling
Hamilton Island is one of the closest, most convenient jumping-off points for the Great Barrier Reef, the largest reef system in the world. Day-boat tours run out to Bait Reef or Hardy Reef, where the water is clear with excellent visibility, with snorkelling for beginners and scuba for certified divers. Clownfish, sea turtles, reef sharks and hundreds of reef fish species turn up all along the way — an experience nothing in Thailand can match.
- Book the Reefworld Pontoon tour ahead — AUD 230-280 per person, with food, snorkelling gear and a semi-submersible tour included.
- Those without a scuba licence can do an introductory dive for an extra AUD 100-150.
- Reef-safe sunscreen only — creams containing oxybenzone are banned because they damage the coral, with heavy fines for breaking the rule.
#6 Catamaran sailing and island hopping · Whitsundays Sailing and Island Hopping
The Whitsundays have 74 islands, almost all of them uninhabited. Sailing between them is the way to take in their beauty in a way an ordinary fast-boat tour can't deliver. Some islands hide deep bays where you can drop anchor and swim in private. Catamarans depart Hamilton Island in several formats — half-day trips, full-day trips, even overnight 2-3 day voyages — making them ideal for couples and families who want privacy out on the Australian sea. A private charter runs high, but split among several people it's great value.
- Half-day trips run AUD 120-160 per person and full-day trips AUD 200-280, including food, snorkelling and a guide — book through the resort's activity centre.
- If your budget allows, hire a private boat (bareboat charter) with a skipper for AUD 800-1,500 a day for complete privacy.
- Out on the boat you need to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours — the sun reflecting off the water is far more intense than on land.

Before You Pack
Hamilton Island is at its best from June to October, when the weather is dry, the sea is clear, and there are no box jellyfish. Avoid December to March, when the rains are heavy and jellyfish are a risk. Plan to stay at least 3-4 nights to fit in a boat trip, a scenic flight, and a sunset on One Tree Hill.
