In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Caer Menai is a late-19th-century Victorian townhouse done up as a homely B&B, with warm-painted walls, Welsh tweed-pattern curtains and pine furniture. There are seven rooms, each a little different, with double or king beds, quality linens, and en-suite bathrooms with a shower. Every room has a free tea and coffee tray, a digital TV and fast Wi-Fi. One guest wrote that it felt more like staying at a friend's house than a hotel — the owners are warm and help with everything. The second-floor rooms are quieter, and a few look out over the old town wall. The rooms are not large, and the building has no lift.
Food and amenities
The full Welsh cooked breakfast is what makes this place. The owners cook it themselves with bacon and sausage from a Welsh butcher on Castle Square, Bara Brith baked fresh each morning, cockle and laverbread on request, black pudding, and eggs from a farm on Anglesey. One reviewer called it the best breakfast they had ever had, plated for each table at the time you ask for it. Vegetarian and vegan versions are available. There is a shared lounge with Snowdonia guidebooks, maps and local tips, and the owners — Welsh locals — will arrange a private Snowdonia tour and steer you to good restaurants and pubs. Wi-Fi is free and fast.
Location and getting there
The B&B sits on Church Street in central Caernarfon — about as convenient as it gets. It is a 5-minute walk to Caernarfon Castle, 3 minutes to Castle Square, 8 minutes to the Welsh Highland Railway steam station, and 7 minutes to the harbour and the Menai Strait; the Segontium Roman Fort is a 12-minute walk. You can reach every main sight on foot within about 10 minutes. Snowdonia National Park is 15 km away, roughly 25 minutes by car, and Bangor Station is 12 km out, about 15 minutes by car.
Things to know before booking
There is no lift, so it is stairs only — a real consideration with heavy luggage. Private parking is very limited; most guests use the Slate Quay public car park, a 3-minute walk away at around $6 a day, and the owners will point you to it. And the rooms are on the smaller side, as you would expect from a small B&B in an old townhouse — come for the warmth and the breakfast, not for space.
Our take
At 9.3/10 and from about $80 a night, Caer Menai is the value pick of this list — a family-run Welsh B&B where the personal touch and that cooked breakfast do the heavy lifting. Best for couples and solo travelers who would rather feel at home than book a chain, and who do not mind a couple of flights of stairs.
