In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The Double Room runs about ¥25,500 a night (around $170) and measures 18 sqm — compact in the Japanese business-hotel way, but the modern design uses every square metre well. There's a 140×200 cm double bed with good, firm bedding, a small work desk with plenty of sockets and USB, a flat-screen TV, and a 3 sqm unit bath that packs a tub, shower and Toto Washlet into one space, with good toiletries, a kettle and free tea and coffee. At 18 sqm it isn't big — it suits couples or travelers without much luggage — but with the Sky Spa to soak in, you don't end up spending much time in the room anyway. It's spotless and quiet.
Food and amenities
The highlight here is the Sky Spa — a top-floor rooftop onsen with Japanese-style hot baths, split men's and women's, where you soak while looking out over the city. The advice is to go up in the evening after a day out: the water's just hot enough, it's calm, and the city lights spread out below, the kind of wind-down you don't usually get at this price. The breakfast buffet at the in-house restaurant is about ¥2,000 (around $14) and covers the Japanese and Western basics — rice, miso soup, grilled fish, eggs, bread and salad — solid for starting the day. There's also a small fitness room.
Location and getting there
Candeo sits right in the centre of Roppongi, a 3-minute walk from Roppongi station on the Hibiya and Oedo Lines. It's an excellent base: 8 minutes on foot to Roppongi Hills and the Mori Art Museum, 7 minutes to the National Art Center Tokyo and 9 minutes to Tokyo Midtown — the whole Roppongi Art Triangle within walking distance. The area around the hotel is the nightlife district, with plenty of restaurants open late. The Hibiya Line runs straight to Ginza in 8 minutes and the Oedo Line reaches Shinjuku in 10 minutes, so you're as well connected as the luxury hotels in the same neighbourhood.
Things to know before booking
The standard rooms are 18 sqm — compact, very much in the Japanese business-hotel mould, so manage your expectations if you're used to roomy. This is a business chain, which means it's clean and functional but has no boutique character or luxury-level service. Amenities are basic too: there's the Sky Spa onsen, but no full spa treatments and no swimming pool, which the 5-star hotels in Roppongi do offer. Check-in is a quick self-service system with staff on hand to help.
Our take
Candeo Hotels Tokyo Roppongi is one of the best-value beds for anyone who wants to stay in the middle of Roppongi on a mid-range budget — a rooftop Sky Spa onsen with city views you rarely find at this price, a 3-minute walk to the station, the full Art Triangle on foot, clean modern rooms and a breakfast buffet. It scores 8.7/10 and starts around $170 a night. We'd recommend it for couples and travelers who plan to be out most of the day and just want a clean, functional room and a Sky Spa soak to come back to.
