The Avenues is one of the oldest, leafiest parts of the Zimbabwean capital: wide streets lined with big trees, red-brick houses and the wrought-iron fences left over from the Rhodesia era. The lodge runs out of a converted house that keeps the charm of that period, with high ceilings, polished wood floors and tall windows that pull in the cool air off the highveld. The roughly 14 rooms are laid out without cramming, each one decorated to feel like a real home rather than a matched hotel set. Several have a small balcony looking onto the back garden, wide enough to sip a morning coffee without seeing another soul. Waking up to soft light through the leaves and birdsong instead of car horns is the kind of thing you simply don't get from a hotel in the CBD.

Food and amenities

The heart of a stay here is the back garden, wide enough to lay out a picnic blanket, with wooden tables scattered under the trees. The long wooden veranda along the side is a favorite spot — guests come down to read in the afternoon, sip rooibos tea (the South African tea popular here), and listen to the wind in the jacarandas. In October and November, when the jacarandas bloom across the whole Avenues at once, the lodge garden turns into a purple carpet you'll want to photograph. Breakfast is cooked fresh and brought to the table — not a buffet. There's usually eggs to order, fresh-baked bread, seasonal fruit (papaya, mango, banana), and Zimbabwean coffee that travelers tend to fall for. Reviews agree the owners and staff will sit down and talk, suggest places to go, and tell you about the city like a friend would. If you're used to big-brand hotels where service is formal, this can feel casual — but that warmth is exactly what keeps people talking about it afterward. The rest stays basic: free Wi-Fi, gated parking, and a backup generator for the power cuts that are routine in Zimbabwe.

Location and getting there

Castille Lodge lands in a sweet spot — set in the quiet, shaded part of the Avenues, yet still in easy walking range of Harare's main sights. The National Gallery of Zimbabwe, the art museum that shows renowned Shona stone sculpture, is about a 5-minute walk. The Harare Botanic Gardens, a large botanical garden of native southern African plants, is about 10 minutes on foot. From there it's roughly 15 minutes into the CBD, with the Eastgate Centre, the Mbare market and the parliament square. If you want to head into town at night or reach a district further out, a taxi from the lodge is easy to call, and the owners can put you in touch with a driver they trust. The airport (Robert Gabriel Mugabe, HRE) is a 20-25 minute drive, which makes this handy for travelers flying in and out of Harare to connect on to Victoria Falls or south to Great Zimbabwe. It's the kind of base you'd want to soak up the Zimbabwean capital for a couple of days without paying big-chain prices.

Things to know before booking

Straight talk to set expectations. The first thing to understand is Zimbabwe's water and power situation. Harare has had power cuts in stretches on the national load-shedding schedule for years, and the tap water isn't reliable in some districts either. The lodge runs a water tank and a backup generator, but at times the hot water in the shower may be weaker than you'd like, or there can be short dips in power — this is the whole city's reality, not a problem unique to this place. If you can't live with that, consider a big chain like the Meikles or the Holiday Inn with full backup systems (though you'll pay a lot more). Second, the facilities are limited: no pool, no gym, no main restaurant on site (breakfast only). For lunch and dinner you'll walk to a restaurant in the Avenues or taxi into the CBD. Third, the furniture and bathrooms are those of a converted old house, not a new hotel, and some rooms may look worn with age — if you're expecting 4- or 5-star polish, this may not match the picture. Finally, safety: the Avenues is reasonably safe by day, but at night, by the standard of any large African city, don't walk far on your own — use the taxi the lodge calls or an app like Vaya or inDrive.

Our take

After reading through plenty of real traveler reviews, Castille Lodge Avenues is the place in Harare that delivers "a friend's-house feel in a quiet old district, at a price you can reach" as honestly as anywhere. If the picture in your head is a backpacker trip flying into Harare to see the National Gallery and the Botanic Gardens for a couple of days before connecting on to Victoria Falls or traveling to Great Zimbabwe, this is the cheapest, most comfortable base for the budget. Waking up to coffee in the garden under the jacarandas, walking to the museum in five minutes, then sitting on the veranda talking to the owners about the city — that atmosphere costs very little here. But if you're expecting a hotel with a pool, a gym, a main restaurant and power and water that never skip, the good location won't make up for the basic facilities, and you'd be better off moving your budget to a 4- or 5-star place in Borrowdale. Overall we give it 8.0/10 — best for backpackers, adventurous solo travelers, and anyone who wants a few nights in Harare on a budget before moving on.
