In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The reason we ranked Chin Shan Hotel at #2 is the Family Quad: roughly 22 sqm, sleeping four comfortably, with breakfast and tea thrown in. The whole room starts at about $86 a night, which works out to roughly $21 a head — genuinely hard to find this high up on Alishan, where the cost of living runs steep. The beds are two twin doubles set side by side, so it suits a family of two adults and two kids, or four friends who don't mind sharing one bathroom. It's simple and on the small side, but for the money it does exactly what it needs to.
Food and amenities
Step out the door and you're straight into a row of restaurants — Taiwanese-style beef noodles, railway bento boxes, mushroom dumplings, and stalls selling fresh Alishan Oolong you can taste before you buy. A 7-11 sits just 50 metres away, open 24 hours, for cup noodles and steamed buns before the 4am train. The street stays busy until about 9pm, so it has the feel of a small mountain market at night. Breakfast comes with the room, and there's free Wi-Fi.
Location and getting there
From the hotel it's about a 5-minute walk — roughly 400 metres — to Alishan station, easy even loaded down with bags. That puts you well placed for the scenic sunrise train up to Zhushan, which leaves at 4:30am daily; a round-trip ticket runs 150 NTD (about $5). Getting up here in the first place means roughly 2.5 hours by bus 7322 from HSR Chiayi, winding its way up to 2,200 metres. Once you're back from sunrise, the Sacred Tree (Shen Mu), a 1,000-year-old cypress, and the Sister Ponds are both an easy walk away.
Things to know before booking
The rooms are small — that's the trade-off for the price, and they're meant for sleeping more than lingering. Online reviews are still thin, so you're working off limited data: Agoda guests give it 8.2/10, with value rated a strong 9.3. And in high season and cherry-blossom time the place books out fast, so reserve well ahead if those are your dates.
Our take
Chin Shan Hotel is the smart move for close friends and small families who'd rather spend the savings on food, Oolong tea and scenic-train tickets than on the room. If you can take it plain and don't need anything fancy, this is the sharpest budget choice on the list — an easy #2 for us.
