In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The Standard Double runs 16 sqm — small by Japanese business-hotel standards but well organized. You get a 140 cm double bed, a work desk, a fridge, a 32-inch flat-screen TV, and a coffee maker, with a compact unit bath that's clean and modern: Toto Washlet and a rain shower included. The bedding is decent for the price, and the Wi-Fi is fast and reliable. Nothing here is fancy, but it's complete and it works — which is the whole point at $54 a night. The building itself is a 14-floor blue-and-white tower; our sample room was on the 8th floor.
Food and amenities
The heart of this place is the free buffet breakfast, served 6:30-9:30 in the ground-floor restaurant at the Choice Hotels standard. The Continental side covers croissants, Danish, fresh bread, jam, butter, cheese, and ham; the Japanese side brings Hiroshima okonomiyaki sticks, anago-meshi (conger eel rice), salad, fruit, and coffee. It's solid rather than lavish — but it's free. The second draw is the free loaner bikes at the front desk, out from 9:00 to 19:00 and back the same day. On two wheels it's 5 minutes to Peace Park, 8 minutes to Hondori, and 15 minutes to Hiroshima Castle.
Location and getting there
The hotel sits in Otemachi, a 5-minute walk from the Hiroshima Museum of Art (¥1,300, about $9), where Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, and Japanese artists fill roughly an hour. From there it's another 7 minutes on foot to Peace Memorial Park — 1.4 km total from the hotel — where you'll find the Atomic Bomb Dome, the Children's Peace Monument, and the museum (¥200). For a day on Miyajima, take the tram from Tokaichi-machi (4 minutes), then the JR Sanyo Line (25 minutes) and the ferry (10 minutes); a JR Pass covers it. From JR Hiroshima Station, it's Hiroden tram line 8, about 15 minutes for ¥220, then a 200 m walk.
Things to know before booking
The rooms start at 16 sqm, so pack light and don't expect space to spread out. The hotel is 2.5 km from JR Hiroshima Station — close enough by tram, but not walking distance from the bullet train. There's no sky lounge, no onsen, and no pool; the amenities stop at a clean room, a free breakfast, and a bike. The English at the front desk is basic but functional. If you want a bike, note the 9:00-19:00 window and that you can't ride one to the Miyajima ferry.
Our take
This is the cheapest stay on the list, and it knows exactly what it is. Free breakfast, free bikes, the Choice Hotels name, and Peace Park 1.4 km away add up to genuine value — a score of 8.8/10 from 90 reviews and rates from $54 that save you roughly ¥5,000 a night versus the pricier hotels in this group. For backpackers, solo travelers, and budget-minded visitors who want a clean bed and a full breakfast without paying for extras they won't use, it's an easy yes.
