In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Rooms come in a few shapes — compact Hotel Rooms, ocean-view Studio Suites, and a 2-bedroom Penthouse Suite with a big balcony. The Studio Suite is the popular pick in reviews: guests say they wake up to the Coral Sea through the balcony every morning and often catch dolphins at first light. The resort is built as several blocks stepping up the hillside, and every one of them faces the water — unlike the in-town hotels that look onto the road.
Food and amenities
The main restaurant, Clipper, serves fresh seafood — they have done a tasting plate with Whitsundays prawns — plus steak and a breakfast buffet. Anchor Bar by the pool pours cocktails and drinks, and the evening mood is easy. On top of that you get three outdoor pools, an oceanside jacuzzi, and a grassy sun deck. It is a different feel from one big lagoon pool — the pools are smaller and spread across the levels, so people don't all pile into one spot. Free Wi-Fi, a gym, a spa, and free parking round it out.
Location and getting there
Coral Sea Resort sits on Ocean View Avenue, on the cliff above Boathaven Bay, a 10-minute downhill walk from the centre of Airlie Beach. We came in by taxi from Whitsunday Coast Airport — 30 minutes along Shute Harbour Road, then up the curve of Ocean View Avenue with dozens of yachts moored in the bay below. The standout feature is the private jetty: there are stairs from the resort straight down to the moorings, so if you have booked Whitsunday Bluepearl, Lady Enid, or Cruise Whitsundays you walk from your room to the boat in a few minutes, no dragging bags to Port of Airlie or Coral Sea Marina at dawn.
Things to know before booking
This is a clifftop, not a sand beach — you reach the water by the jetty stairs, so for sand you would head to the Airlie Beach Lagoon or Cannonvale Beach nearby. The walk to Main Street is a pleasant 10 minutes down but more tiring coming back up, and after 9pm a taxi is the smarter call. Suite and Penthouse rates run high in the dry season (April to October), so book early. And don't expect a single big lagoon pool — the three here are each fairly small.
Our take
Coral Sea Resort suits couples and families who want a sea-view resort close to the marina, especially anyone booking a Whitsundays or Whitehaven Beach tour who wants to board straight from the hotel jetty. If this trip is built around sailing and you don't mind the extra 10-minute walk into Main Street, this is the pick we'd open the list with — the best-value sea view in Airlie Beach. Real-guest score is 8.4 on Trip.com, the highest of any sea-view resort in town.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- A 4-star beachfront resort above Boathaven Bay with its own private jetty.
- Three outdoor pools, an oceanside jacuzzi, and a grassy sun deck for lying over the water.
- Almost every room faces the sea, including 2-bedroom Penthouse suites with big balconies.
- The Clipper Restaurant and Anchor Bar serve fresh seafood and steak, with cocktails by the pool in the evening.
- Free Wi-Fi, gym, spa, and free parking — the resort is fully kitted out.
- It is about a 10-minute uphill walk back from Main Street and the Lagoon, so it is less convenient if you plan to eat out a lot.
- Suite and Penthouse rates climb in the dry season (April to October), so book ahead.
- There is no big lagoon-style pool like the international chain resorts — each of the three pools is on the smaller side.
