In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Country Hotel Takayama is a small 80-room, 5-storey hotel in a plain white-and-grey building, sitting inside the Teramachi (Temple Town) district where 13 temples line up in a row. The lobby is compact but clean — a check-in desk, a couple of sofas, a free tea-and-coffee corner and luggage storage. Guests booked the Twin Standard at 18 sqm for $94 a night: western twin beds, a small desk, a 32-inch TV and a little minibar with free water and tea. The bathroom is a standard unit-bath with shower and tub, a Toto Washlet and POLA Japan toiletries. There is nothing fancy here, but for a budget room around the $94 mark it is genuinely clean — the bedding is soft enough, the air-con is quiet, the Wi-Fi reaches every corner, and it is 100% non-smoking. You even get a yukata and slippers.
Food and amenities
This is a stripped-back hotel, so set expectations: no pool, no spa, no in-house onsen. Breakfast is an optional $23-a-person add-on — a simple, freshly made Japanese plate of Hida miso soup, egg and fish — and it is worth booking if you would rather not go out first thing. The free tea and coffee in the lobby, free Wi-Fi and free parking round out a short but honest list of perks.
Location and getting there
The address is the whole point. The hotel is a flat 6-minute walk (450 m) from JR Takayama Station, with no stairs, so luggage is easy. A 4-minute walk brings you to Hida Kokubunji, the oldest temple in Gifu prefecture, founded in the 8th century — its grounds hold a 1,200-year-old ginkgo that rises 28 metres, designated a National Treasure (open 06:00–17:00, free). From there the rest of Teramachi unspools — Soyu-ji, Hokke-ji, Kokutai-ji and the rest — quiet, tourist-free, and free to walk. Sanmachi Old Town is 7 minutes on foot, where street stalls sell Hida-gyu skewers for about $6 and the Funasaka brewery pours free sake tastings.
Things to know before booking
There is no onsen on site — to soak, you walk 600 m to the Yu Takayama public bath ($23 a person, open 14:00–24:00), which has an indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo and a sauna fed by real Hida mineral water. Rooms also start small at 14 sqm, tighter than the resorts and ryokan elsewhere on this list, so the single in particular can feel cramped with bags — the Twin is the safer pick. And there is no kaiseki dinner or ryokan-style service; this is a clean, no-frills room, nothing more.
Our take
Country Hotel Takayama is the smart-money choice when the budget is tight but you still want to be in the thick of it. From $80 it is the cheapest of the top picks, a 6-minute walk from the station, parked right beside Teramachi's 13 temples and 7 minutes from Sanmachi. The 8.5/10 score backs it up. It suits backpackers, solo travellers and history buffs more than honeymooners — and the 1,200-year-old ginkgo at Hida Kokubunji, four minutes from the door, is the quiet highlight that makes the address worth it.

Insider Tips
- For a soak, walk 600 m to the Yu Takayama public bath ($23 a person, real Hida mineral water) since the hotel has no onsen of its own.
- Walk the Teramachi temple loop for free — the 13 temples open 06:00–17:00, including Soyu-ji, Hokke-ji and Kokutai-ji, and the 1,200-year-old ginkgo at Hida Kokubunji.
- Book the Twin rather than the single — it is noticeably larger for only about $14 more, and the add-on breakfast ($23 a person) is freshly made Hida miso soup, egg and grilled fish.
