Rooms and decor

Our room ran about 20 square metres, with old tile floors, a carved-wood bed painted with flower motifs, and the indigo Bai cotton bedding you see all over this region. There's an antique teak writing desk set by a big folding window that opens onto the sun terrace and the central garden. The owners have slipped in air-con, Wi-Fi, a water heater and a clean white-tiled bathroom — added gently, without wrecking the original feel. It's warm in the way a grandparent's house in the countryside is warm: birdsong, a bit of wind, sunlight coming through the tiles.

Food and amenities

This is a homestay, not a hotel, so the amenities are simple — but the real food story is just outside the door. The nearby morning market sells strawberries, vegetables and fresh fish straight from local sellers, and guests mention walking out for a bowl of Yunnan crossing-the-bridge rice noodles most mornings, usually ¥15-20 a bowl. You're in a five-generation family home with a lounge area and friendly, easygoing service rather than a front desk and a buffet line.

Location and getting there

You're in the heart of Dali Old Town on Yu'er Road, near Wuhua Tower and the Old Town park. It's a 4-minute walk to Fuxing Road, a 6-minute walk to Renmin Road and about 10 minutes on foot to Erhai Gate, with that morning market close by. Reviews back up the 9.3 location score — when everything you want is this walkable, it earns it.

The Bai house itself

The building is a san fang yi zhao bi — a traditional Bai layout of three wings around a central courtyard with a reflecting screen wall on one side, the kind of architecture you really only find in Dali and Xizhou. The outer walls are lime plaster and grey tile, painted with flowers, mountains and auspicious Chinese characters in the indigo ink that's a Bai signature. Inside there are timber columns, carved wooden beams and original folding wood windows from the late Qing dynasty. Cross the courtyard and it's hard not to wonder how five generations lived their days in here — something a modern chain hotel simply can't hand you.

Things to know before booking

This is an old house, so expect basic facilities rather than hotel-grade polish — if you need four-star comfort, this isn't the one. Real guest scores sit around 8.5, a notch below the leaders on this list. And rooms fill fast in high season, so book ahead if your dates are locked in.

Our take

Dali Ankangyu Homestay is the best fit for backpackers, culture-minded solo travellers and budget-conscious couples who want to sleep inside a genuine old Bai home in the heart of the Old Town, all for around $26-51 a night. You won't find this atmosphere at this price anywhere else in Dali. If hotel comfort is your priority, look elsewhere — but if you love history and culture, we'd happily tell you to spend a night or two here.
