Rooms and decor

The inn runs 4 floors and a few dozen rooms, designed in a Chinese-modern style — warm brown wood paired with ivory marble. Our Deluxe Twin came in around 26 sqm, with a thick mattress and crisp Egyptian-cotton sheets, plus an old-style Chinese tea table set with blue-and-white ceramic cups for brewing your own. The bathroom is finished in blue mosaic tile in a Bai floral pattern, with a rain shower and good water pressure, and the amenities are by the Chinese brand Marubi in a green-tea scent. Reviewers consistently call out the warm staff, who welcome you with Pu'er tea and hand-draw a walking map with your route penned in.

Food and amenities

The real star here is the 4th-floor rooftop, open to guests all day and free. It faces west onto the 19 Cangshan peaks lined up like a natural wall, and the northwest corner catches the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple (崇圣寺三塔), the city's landmark. Reviewers say to go up around 18:30 for the sunset behind the mountains — the sky shifts from orange to pink to purple inside half an hour. The deck has canvas sofas, wood coffee tables and a row of Tibetan prayer flags for photos; one couple who stayed called it a photographer's heaven. Breakfast, a lounge area and 24-hour service round out the basics.

Location and getting there

Turn left out of the door and you're on Renmin Road (人民路) — the so-called "foreigner street" — in 3 minutes: food stalls, live-music bars, tea shops and local tie-dye shops, busy all day. Another 6 minutes on foot reaches the Wuhua Tower at the centre of the Old Town, and 10 minutes gets you to the south gate where the Fuxing pedestrian street starts. Near the inn there's the Erhai Park (洱海公园) boat pier, where a lake cruise runs ¥120.

Things to know before booking

This is a small inn — only a few dozen rooms — so availability is genuinely tight, and rooms fill fast in high season. Book ahead if your dates are locked. The Erhai Gate area is also fairly lively through the daytime, which is a plus if you want to be in the thick of the Old Town and a minus if you're after total quiet. If the rooftop is the reason you're booking, say so when you reserve and ask for a Deluxe room on that side.

Dali Yunxi Boutique Inn is at its best for photography-minded couples and anyone who wants to watch the Cangshan sunset from a private rooftop. In the $57–114 a night range, we think its mix of location and view is hard to match in Dali. Book ahead, ask for a Deluxe on the rooftop side, and you'll get the most out of it — an easy recommendation for the romantics.
