In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The two-storey building is newly built but designed to sit comfortably alongside the surrounding Bai (bai) architecture: grey-sand cut-stone brickwork outside, dark brown hardwood columns and doors, and a curved grey tile roof in the traditional style. Our room was a Garden View, around 24 sqm, with a window that opens onto the courtyard and a garden planted with plum-cherry trees, bamboo, and banana flowers in ceramic pots. A king bed sits under crisp white cotton-linen sheets, and the bathroom is finished in natural sandstone with a rain shower and green-tea-scented amenities in little ceramic bottles.
Food and amenities
This is a B&B, so the warmth comes from the hosts rather than a long facilities list. The owners are a middle-aged married couple who get singled out in reviews for looking after guests like family — they pour hot chrysanthemum tea with sweet orange cake and tell you the place is meant to feel like home. Breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and a lounge area round things out. One detail that explains the scores: they clean with natural, unscented products on purpose, because they worry about small children and guests with allergies.
Location and getting there
Deer Inn sits just outside the West Gate (Cangshan Gate) of Dali Old Town, about 870 metres from the centre — an 11-12 minute walk into the heart of the Old Town. Five minutes on foot gets you to the Caicun morning market, where locals sell vegetables, fruit, and fresh produce; we bought sweet local strawberries for about ¥10 a box and ate them back in the room. Nearby restaurants serve clay-pot fish (shaguo yu) and Dali herb-roasted duck at friendlier prices than you'll find inside the Old Town walls.
Things to know before booking
The trade-off here is distance: you're about 870 m out, so it's an 11-12 minute walk each way rather than stepping straight onto the Old Town's main streets. It's also a small property with a limited number of rooms, which means little flexibility on dates or room types. In high season those rooms fill fast, so if your dates are fixed, book well ahead. None of this is a dealbreaker for a quiet, design-led stay — just plan around it.
Our take
Deer Inn is best for couples, close friends, and solo travelers who put cleanliness and a calm atmosphere above a dead-central address. At $43 to $86 a night it's strong value, the design is genuinely lovely, and the owners give local-friend level advice on circling Erhai Lake. For quiet-seekers and neat freaks, we'd happily send you here.
