In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
All 21 rooms lean classic European — dark woven fabrics, warm brown-gold tones, carved wood furniture, small chandeliers, and high ceilings that still keep the original wooden beams in some rooms. The highlight most reviews single out is the traditional wooden Maltese balcony on the Republic Street side: open it in the morning, take your coffee, and watch the city's main street come to life or the sunrise catch the sandstone walls. Plenty of guests call it the single best image of their Malta trip. Bathrooms are compact but neatly done and well stocked, and some Deluxe rooms have a soaking tub angled toward the historic buildings outside.
Food and amenities
Up at the top of the building is a small rooftop with a couple of tables for drinks — the evening spot here. The setting sun turns the sandstone roofs and church domes across Valletta a soft gold, and you can pick out the dome of St Paul's Pro-Cathedral and the glint of Grand Harbour in the distance. Downstairs there's a compact spa for a massage and a full gym for anyone who wants it. There's no pool — a constraint of the historic building — but the palazzo atmosphere more than makes up for it. Note that breakfast isn't always included in the rate, and its quality is middling, so check before you book.
Location and getting there
This is Domus Zamittello's strongest card. The hotel is at No. 7, the head of Republic Street, the main artery that runs from the City Gate down through the city — step out of the lobby and you're straight into the UNESCO old town. Walk about 3 minutes to St John's Co-Cathedral, the baroque cathedral that holds Caravaggio's The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, the one sight everyone visits in Valletta. Another 4 minutes gets you to the Grand Master's Palace, and 7 minutes to Upper Barrakka Gardens, the high garden overlooking the Three Cities and Grand Harbour. The Sliema ferry across to Sliema and St Julian's is about 8 minutes on foot. Best of all, the island-wide Valletta Terminus bus hub is right next to the hotel — buses to Mdina, the fishing village of Marsaxlokk, the Blue Grotto and the prehistoric temples at Hagar Qim all leave from your doorstep. From the airport (MLA) it's a 25–30 minute drive, or the budget X4 bus. If you're basing yourself in Valletta to see the whole island, this is about the best address there is.
Things to know before booking
Straight talk to help you decide. The first thing reviews flag is room size — some entry-level rooms run small, a limit of a historic building you can only adapt so much. If you're traveling with several big bags or staying a while, go for a Deluxe room or above for more space to spread out. Second, there's no pool, which can be a shame in the Maltese summer; if your trip is mostly about lounging by the water, a seafront stay in Sliema or St Julian's may suit better, but for walking the old town and bus day trips this location wins. Third, rooms facing Republic Street can pick up evening noise from tourists and restaurants, especially on weekend nights in high season — light sleepers should ask ahead for a room toward the inside or on the top floor. Finally, check whether breakfast is included; some rates leave it out and the value is only middling, so a café on Republic Street nearby is a fair alternative.
Our take
After reading through hundreds of real reviews, Domus Zamittello delivers on three things with confidence: historic-building charm, a top-tier location at the mouth of the old town, and warm, easygoing staff. If your picture of the trip is exploring St John's Co-Cathedral in the morning, coffee on a wooden Maltese balcony in the afternoon, and wine on the rooftop watching the sun set over a UNESCO city, this place nails it — and the Valletta Terminus hub at the door makes it an easy base for island-wide day trips. If you're expecting a resort with a big pool, a full gym and large rooms, the size of a historic building may feel like less than you hoped. Overall we give it 8.8/10, best for couples and history lovers who value old-building character over resort-style facilities.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- About the best location you'll find in Valletta — right at the head of Republic Street by the City Gate, so you step off the bus or out of a taxi straight into the hotel without dragging bags over rough stone streets.
- A genuine 17th-century baroque palazzo, beautifully restored to keep the high ceilings, marble staircase and wooden Maltese balconies. Reviewers describe it as feeling like staying in a museum you're allowed to live in.
- Walk 3 minutes to St John's Co-Cathedral, 7 minutes to Upper Barrakka Gardens, 8 minutes to the Sliema ferry — you can see Valletta all day and barely touch a car.
- A small rooftop to take an evening drink over the sandstone roofs and church domes across the city — a favorite spot mentioned in plenty of reviews.
- Warm, easygoing staff in that Maltese way. Lots of reviews say they remember guests' names and pass on restaurant tips and quiet sights like a friend would.
- Some rooms run small, a limit of working inside a historic building you can only adapt so much. Travelers with several large bags or a long stay may feel boxed in — go for a Deluxe room or above if the budget allows.
- There's no pool, which is a constraint of the old building. If you want a swim you'll walk to the harbour or take the ferry over to Sliema — fine in winter, a shame in the summer heat.
- Rooms facing Republic Street can pick up noise from tourists and restaurants in the evening. If you're a light sleeper, ask for a room toward the inside of the building or on a high floor.

Insider Tips
- Ask for a room with a wooden Maltese balcony on the Republic Street side — mornings there, coffee in hand watching the old town's main street, are the best of it. If you sleep light, ask for the top floor instead to dodge the noise.
- Go up to the rooftop at sunset, when the light turns the sandstone roofs and church domes gold — several reviews call it the best photo spot of their whole stay.
- The Valletta Terminus bus stop next to the hotel is the island's main hub. Grab a map from the concierge and plan day trips to Mdina, Marsaxlokk or the Blue Grotto all from one place.
