Elements of Byron is a 5-star MGallery by Sofitel resort on Bayshore Drive, just north of Byron Bay town. Guests say the moment you arrive it reads differently from a normal town hotel — this is 50 acres with 202 villas scattered through eucalyptus forest and native bush. Each villa is built for privacy and opens straight onto the trees, so you wake up to birdsong rather than a car park. The look is low-key coastal: timber, neutral linens and big glazed doors that pull the bush indoors, with most villas set well apart from their neighbours so you rarely hear another room.

Food and amenities

The resort runs two outdoor pools, the Osprey Spa, and a gym that looks out over the bush. Drift Bar & Restaurant handles the food, leaning on local produce and Australian seafood, with a bar right by the pool for an afternoon drink. We like that bikes and surfboards are free to borrow — easy to ride out toward Cape Byron Lighthouse in the morning before it gets busy. Wi-Fi is free across the resort and so is private parking, which adds up over a long stay, and real guests give the place 9.2/10 on Trip.com.

Location and getting there

The part that wins our team over is that the resort sits directly on Belongil Beach — a short walk through the trees and you're on a long, quiet white-sand beach that stays calm even when town is heaving. To soften the fact that it's about 5km out of the centre, the resort runs a solar-powered tram that ferries guests in, so you don't have to drive or hunt for parking on Jonson Street. The nearest airport is Ballina Byron Gateway (BNK), roughly 30km away, since Byron Bay has no airport of its own; many guests also fly into Gold Coast and drive down the coast in about an hour and a half.

Things to know before booking

This is the priciest opener on the list, from around A$249 a night and well past A$600 for the top villas, so it's a splurge rather than a default. You're also 5km from Main Beach, which means the tram, a bike or a car becomes part of daily life — fine for a retreat, less ideal if you want to roll out of bed onto Jonson Street. And in high season, especially December to February, the villas fill quickly and rates climb, so this rewards planning a couple of months ahead rather than a last-minute booking.

Our take

Elements of Byron suits honeymooners and families who want a nature retreat, not a base for nightlife. If your Byron trip is about recharging between the beach and the eucalyptus forest — and you're happy to take the tram into town — this is an opener we're confident putting at number one.
