G Hotel Gurney

G Hotel Gurney is the 5-star to pick if you came to shop — it plugs straight into two malls and the Gurney Drive hawker stalls are a 5-minute walk, at a price that undercuts the heritage hotels.

In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
G Hotel Gurney opened in 2008 under the G Hotel Group, on Persiaran Gurney beside Gurney Plaza and Gurney Paragon, the two big malls on Penang's north shore. A full renovation in 2018 refreshed all 312 rooms across 22 floors, running from a 32-sqm Superior up to the 75-sqm G Suite. The look is contemporary urban — white, grey and light wood, minimal designer furniture, wood floors, grey-and-cream fabrics. You get a premium king bed, fast Wi-Fi, a 50-inch smart TV, a minibar, Nespresso in the suites, and Pelican toiletries; from Deluxe grade up the bathroom adds a rain shower and a bathtub. Ask for floor 20 or higher on the sea side and you face Gurney Drive and the Strait of Malacca. Real guest scores sit at 8.6 on Trip.com, 8.7 on Agoda and 8.8 on Booking — most praise the location and the value, with the infinity pool a close third; the knocks are the distance to the heritage core and the check-in queue.
Food and amenities
The heart of the place is being wired into two malls — Gurney Plaza, Penang's flagship, and Gurney Paragon next door — both reachable without stepping outside. Spoon Restaurant is the main dining room: the breakfast buffet runs 06:30 to 10:30 at MYR 95 (about $22) and covers Malay, Chinese, Indian and Western with a big dessert spread. Spoon Cafe on the lobby level does all-day sandwiches, nasi lemak and laksa. The infinity pool on the 7th-floor roof is 25 metres long with city and Gurney sea views, and there's a kids' pool beside it. The 24-hour gym adds a sauna and steam room, and G Spa runs four treatment rooms — a 60-minute aromatherapy massage is MYR 280 (about $64). Parking sits under the building, shared with Gurney Plaza, at MYR 10 a day (about $2.25). Overall score: 8.7/10.
Location and getting there
G Hotel Gurney stands at 168A Persiaran Gurney on Gurney Drive, on Penang's north shore against the Strait of Malacca. Gurney Plaza and Paragon connect directly to the building. The Gurney Drive Hawker Centre — char kway teow, cendol, apom — is a 5-minute walk, and the Gurney Drive esplanade for a seafront sunset stroll is the same. Wat Chayamangkalaram, the Thai temple, is an 8-minute drive; the Penang Botanical Gardens, 10 minutes. The Georgetown UNESCO core (Khoo Kongsi, the street art) is a 10-15 minute drive, Penang Hill cable car 15 minutes, Kek Lok Si temple 20 minutes, and Batu Ferringhi beach 20 minutes. Penang airport (PEN) is 22 km out — a taxi runs MYR 65-80 (about $15-18) in about 30 minutes.
Things to know before booking
First, you're 10-15 minutes by car from the UNESCO core. A Grab to Khoo Kongsi or the street art is MYR 8-12 (about $2-3); if you'd rather walk the heritage streets from your door, the E&O or Edison are the better call. Second, weekday check-in between 14:00 and 16:00 runs slow — 312 rooms plus tour groups landing together — so arrive before 13:30, drop your bags and shop the Plaza first. Third, rates over Chinese New Year, Christmas and the school holidays jump to $145-215 a night, so book those windows 4-6 weeks ahead. Fourth, request floor 20 or higher on the sea side when you book — that's the full Gurney Drive and strait view; lower floors just look onto the mall.
Our take
G Hotel Gurney is the cleanest fit for shopping-and-eating families and business travelers in Penang. You get a 5-star, 312-room tower connected to Gurney Plaza and Gurney Paragon, a rooftop infinity pool with city and sea views, the full Spoon breakfast buffet, and the Gurney Drive Hawker Centre a 5-minute walk away — from around $69 a night. If your trip is shopping, hawker food and a smart room, or you're a budget-minded first-timer, this is the most sensible base on the island. If you'd rather sleep inside the UNESCO core and walk to the street art, the E&O or Edison suit you better. Overall we give it 8.7/10 — best for families, shopping and business.
