In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The room types are where Grand Yiju earns its place. The Royal Garden King runs about 36 sqm — open the door and you meet a wooden bed carved with dragons and phoenixes, deep-red Chinese silk bedding, and a wall hung with calligraphy reading ping'an (peace). There's a Chinese tea table with a bamboo cup set, and a classic grey-marble bathroom stocked with oolong-tea toiletries. This room comes in 11 other themes too — think Ming Scholar, Tang Princess and Confucius Study. Reviewers who saw more than one say every theme genuinely differs. The overall score sits around 9.3, which is very good.
Food and amenities
What stands out here is that this is a real boutique, not a chain — the owner set out to collect Chinese art for the walls, from antique calligraphy brushes and dragon-carved wood panels to antique porcelain plates and Suzhou embroidery. The lobby is split into small tea rooms where guests sit and sip free Longjing green tea, and staff wear red-and-gold Tang Suit robes. The feel is closer to walking into a Ming-dynasty nobleman's house than a hotel lobby.
Location and getting there
It's a 8-minute walk to Xinjiekou Square, with the Deji Plaza mall just 400 metres away. A 12-minute walk takes you to the Drum Tower (Gulou) — the city's Ming-era war-drum landmark — and the surrounding Drum Tower Park, where you'll find sweets and the Lao Da Fang mooncakes nearby. MRT Drum Tower on Line 1 is a 5-minute walk; the Presidential Palace is 7 minutes by Didi, and the Confucius Temple about 20 minutes.
Things to know before booking
This is character over kit: facilities are simpler than at a luxury 5-star, so come for the design and the address, not a spa or pool. Xinjiekou is also Nanjing's busiest, most crowded district — great for walking out into the action, less so if you want quiet. And in high season the rooms fill quickly, so book well ahead if your dates are locked in.
Our take
Grand Yiju suits couples who love a period mood, travelers chasing an Instagrammable hotel, and anyone who finds the Jinling booked out or over budget. We were taken with the art, which leans into the roots of China's Six Dynasties, and with themed rooms that photograph well from every angle. At around $57 for a 4-star boutique in the heart of the CBD, it's a clear value pick and a real change from the mass-market options.
