Rooms and decor

The Standard room runs NT$2,700 (about $86 a night) and is a sensible size for two, done in warm tones with a king bed that's firm but soft enough to sink into. You get a desk, a chair, a wardrobe and plenty of outlets, plus a clean bathroom where the shower runs strong and the hot water arrives fast. Soundproofing holds up reasonably well, the air-con cools quickly, and the blackout curtains do their job. Nothing here is flashy, but everything works, it's clean, and it sleeps well — clearly worth what you pay.

Food and amenities

What sets H2O apart from the usual 4-star is the rooftop pool — reviewers recommend an evening swim, when the air cools off and you can see across the Kaohsiung skyline in every direction. There's a gym too. Breakfast is a buffet that genuinely earns its praise: Taiwanese dishes, Western options, congee, dim sum, bread and fresh fruit, all tasty and with unlimited refills. The hotel has free parking, a real plus if you're driving yourself around, the free Wi-Fi works well, and the front desk is open 24 hours.

Location and getting there

H2O sits in Gushan, north of the centre — and the headline is that you can walk to Ruifeng Night Market, the largest night market in Kaohsiung, where hundreds of stalls keep you grazing all night. Kaohsiung Arena MRT on the Red Line is a 6 to 8 minute walk, putting Central Park, Formosa Boulevard and the run out to Sizihwan within easy reach. You're also near Kaohsiung Arena, an indoor venue that hosts concerts now and then, and the streets around the hotel have a fair number of convenience stores and local restaurants.

Things to know before booking

This is Gushan, to the north — not the historic old-town core, so you're trading a central address for the pool and the market. The nearest MRT is a 6 to 8 minute walk rather than right at the door. And the standard rooms are a regular size: comfortable for two, but don't expect anything especially roomy. None of that is a dealbreaker for the right traveler, but go in knowing what the trade-offs are.

H2O Hotel is a strong-value 4-star for Kaohsiung — a rooftop pool, a good breakfast, and a walk to Ruifeng Night Market, the city's biggest. It scores 8.6/10 from real guests. It may not be in the old-town centre, but the MRT connects it well and rooms start at just $86 a night. It's best for families who want the kids in the pool and couples who like to wander a night market with something good in hand.
