In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Picture the Holiday Inn Express you know from trips abroad — clean white cut with pale blue, soft Express Premium beds, high-pressure showers, a work desk with plenty of outlets and a flat-screen on the wall — then add a little of Tegucigalpa, through the mountain views that ring the Honduran capital on nearly every side. Across hundreds of real guest reviews on both Booking and Agoda, the common thread is how spotless the place is — "like new," carpets without a mark, sheets pressed crisp, that just-cleaned smell. Around 107 rooms spread over a 6-floor building, designed to match newer Express hotels worldwide, so anyone who's stayed with the brand will feel at home right away. Rooms aren't large but are laid out well, with a seating area, a mini-fridge and a coffee maker. Nothing flashy, nothing over-reaching — it does the job of a midscale hotel and does it for the money. Rooms facing the grounds at the back get an open mountain view, best in the morning when low cloud sits on the peaks.
Food and amenities
If one thing puts this Express ahead of the others, it's the free breakfast buffet, which plenty of reviews call "one of the best Express breakfasts I've stayed with" — and that's not an exaggeration. There are eggs cooked to order, hot omelets and fried eggs off the pan, baleadas (the classic Honduran breakfast, a tortilla folded around refried beans and cheese), ham, bacon and sausage, several kinds of fresh tropical fruit — papaya, pineapple, watermelon — fresh pastries, cereal, yogurt, juice, and the strong, aromatic Honduran coffee that has people back for a second cup. The dining room runs 6:00-10:00; go before 8 if you want to skip the crowd. Elsewhere, there's a compact outdoor pool behind the building open until 22:00, a 24-hour gym with a full set of cardio machines, free Wi-Fi quick enough to run a Zoom call smoothly, free parking inside the gated grounds, and a lobby with a quiet work corner and tea and coffee through the day. It suits both business travelers flying in for meetings and families passing through.
Location and getting there
The hotel sits near Boulevard Morazan, the main road of Tegucigalpa's business district, where malls, restaurants, banks and several embassies all gather. A few minutes' walk gets you to Mall Multiplaza, one of the city's top malls, with restaurants, a supermarket and a cinema. Not far off is the Miraflores area, known for its restaurants and good cafes. And, important for anyone here on health grounds, Hospital Honduras Medical Center — one of the country's best private hospitals — is a short walk away, which is why a lot of people choose this hotel when they're in town for treatment or visiting family. Nearby too is Basilica de Suyapa, Honduras's most sacred church and a landmark for culture travelers. From Toncontin airport (TGU) it's about a 15-20 minute drive — an airport famous for its short runway hemmed in by mountains, where pilots need special skill and the landing is a memory that outlasts the trip. Around the city, lean on Uber: cheaper and safer than ordinary taxis.
Things to know before booking
Straight talk to help you decide. The first and biggest point is safety around the hotel. Inside the grounds it's very safe, with guards and full CCTV, but the area around Boulevard Morazan isn't recommended for walking at night — Tegucigalpa is a capital with a high crime problem, and staff will tell you the same thing: after 18:00, take an Uber or have them call the hotel's taxi, no matter how short the distance. Plenty of reviews confirm the staff are very good at sorting this out. Second, the pool is fairly small and unheated — Tegucigalpa sits at around 1,000 metres above sea level, with cool mornings and evenings, so the water can run too cold to linger in at times; anyone hoping to swim seriously may be slightly let down. Third, traffic noise from Boulevard Morazan — rooms facing the road catch some in the morning, so if you sleep light, ask for one at the back facing the grounds, which is much quieter and throws in a mountain view as a bonus. Last, a small one: some reviews say the gym is on the small side and you can't lift heavy, so if you're serious about training, set your expectations.
Our take
From reading hundreds of real reviews across Booking, Agoda and Tripadvisor, Holiday Inn Express Tegucigalpa by IHG is one of the safest, most predictable and best-value picks in the city. The pitch is three clear points — a free breakfast buffet that tops the Express chain, rooms kept clean to the newer IHG standard, and a central spot on Boulevard Morazan within walking distance of the malls, restaurants and a leading private hospital. It suits business travelers flying in for meetings, medical travelers who want to be near Hospital Honduras Medical Center, and families passing through on the way to Roatan or Copan. Anyone after a full-on luxury stay with a heated pool and a complete spa will want to look elsewhere — this is a midscale hotel doing its own job as well as it can, in the $85-135 a night range. Overall we give it 8.6/10, a safe, good-value choice in a city that isn't a top tourist stop but one many Honduras trips have to pass through.

- Go down for breakfast before 8am to beat the crowd, and don't miss the baleadas — a Honduran breakfast you'll rarely find at other hotels in the same chain.
