In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Home Phutoey River Kwai has a real character of its own — one family has run it for 30-plus years, putting their energy into planting trees, growing a herb garden and building the on-site activities that set it apart. The roughly 100 rooms are spread through a large stretch of forest, in several styles, from small log cabins set among the trees near the resort's little waterfall to resort-block rooms dotted around the various zones. The log cabins have the best feel: wide wooden balconies that open onto big trees and birdsong, simple all-wood decor, a soft bed, air-con and an en-suite bathroom. The block rooms are standard size and comfortable to look at, with many balconies over the garden and some over the Khwae Noi River. The catch is the resort's age — rooms that have not been renovated can look dated and a little worn, and some reviewers suggest asking for recent photos and choosing a freshly done room. Anyone after brand-new-hotel polish may need to adjust expectations, but anyone who loves a true wood-cabin-in-the-forest feel will love it here.
Food and amenities
What sets Home Phutoey apart is its everything-in-one-place set of facilities you will not find at an ordinary resort. The first highlight is the Japanese-style hot-spring onsen, fed by the natural hot spring in the Sai Yok area — the resort has built it into a relaxed soaking pool at around 38-40°C, free for guests, and it is the most blissful part of the day after hours of sightseeing. Second is the Tree Top Adventure, a high-ropes course 5 to 15 metres up with rope bridges, ziplines and elevated walkways, fun and challenging for children 6 and up and adults, with safety gear and staff on hand. Third is the small in-resort waterfall, running from the natural hot spring over the rocks and through the herb garden, a photo-and-rest spot you do not get elsewhere. On top of that there is a large garden swimming pool, a riverside restaurant serving Thai and Western food at standard prices, boat and kayak trips on the Khwae Noi River, guided trips to nearby waterfalls, and a herb garden of 100-plus species to wander. The overall feel is friendly and homespun rather than big-chain hotel.
Location and getting there
The resort sits in Sai Yok on the Khwae Noi River, inside Sai Yok National Park, about 70 km from Kanchanaburi town — a 1.5-hour drive along Highway 323 toward Sai Yok and into the park road. From Bangkok it is roughly 3.5 hours by motorway. Sai Yok Yai Waterfall is a 15-minute drive away, falling straight into the Khwae Noi River and easy to reach on foot, and the Hin Dat hot springs and the Sai Yok stretch of the Death Railway are 20 to 30 minutes off. Hellfire Pass is about 30 minutes by car, while Erawan Waterfall, on the other side of the province, is about 2 hours away. Getting around Kanchanaburi really means your own car or a guided trip, as there is no convenient public transport. The resort runs transfers from Bangkok, and guided trips come with a driver, so you do not have to drive yourself. In short, if your trip is built around nature and waterfalls and you want a resort with activities on site, this location lands very well for the Sai Yok side.
Things to know before booking
Straight talk to help you decide. First, the older rooms and patchy renovation — the resort has been open 30-plus years and some rooms are more worn and dim than they should be, with a few disappointed reviews. Ask for recent photos and a freshly renovated room, or pick a log cabin for a better feel. Second, the location 70 km from town, a 1.5-hour drive: getting to the Bridge over the River Kwai, the town markets or good in-town restaurants takes real travel time, and dining outside the resort is limited, so you will mostly eat on site. Third, the large grounds and the walking — rooms are spread through the forest and the trek to the onsen, pool, Tree Top or restaurant can be long, so older travellers and parents with small kids should request a room near the facilities or lean on the resort golf cart. Fourth, the seasons: in the rainy months (June to October) the forest is green and the waterfalls are full, but the paths to the onsen and Tree Top can be slippery or closed on some days, while the hot season (March to May) is warm even in the forest. The best window is November to February.
Our take
After reading through hundreds of real guest reviews, Home Phutoey River Kwai Hotspring & Nature Resort is the resort that sells "all-round nature plus a Japanese onsen plus Tree Top Adventure" like nowhere else in Kanchanaburi. If the trip in your head is a log cabin in the forest, waking to birdsong, an evening soak in the hot-spring onsen, a day of Tree Top or kayaking on the Khwae Noi, and dinner by the water with the forest as your soundtrack, this is about as good a fit as it gets. It suits laid-back families who want their kids in nature without the hardship, couples who like a forest setting, and the adventure crowd after on-site activities. If you are expecting a brand-new 5-star hotel or easy access to the town centre, the dated rooms and the distance may not land. Overall we give it 8.8/10, best for nature lovers who value the experience and the activities over newness or city convenience.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- A Japanese-style hot-spring onsen, which is rare in Thailand — the resort owns a natural hot spring on the site and has turned it into a relaxed soaking pool at 38-40°C, free for guests. Late afternoon, after a full day out, is the sweet spot.
- The Tree Top Adventure course is right on the grounds: rope bridges, ziplines and high walkways strung 5 to 15 metres up through the trees. Kids 6 and up and adults can ride it, with safety gear and staff at every point, and it keeps the active set busy for hours.
- There is a genuine little waterfall inside the resort, running over the rocks and through the herb garden. It is a photo spot and a place to relax that you simply do not get at an ordinary resort — think of it as a mini Erawan.
- The Sai Yok setting, on the Khwae Noi River and surrounded by limestone forest, is fresh and cool. You are close to Sai Yok Yai Waterfall, the Hin Dat hot springs and the Death Railway, which makes it a strong base for exploring the Sai Yok side of Kanchanaburi.
- Better value than the luxury resorts — rooms start around $100 a night and include the pool, the onsen, Tree Top and the waterfall, so families get a full nature experience without paying 5-star prices.
- The resort has been open 30-plus years, and rooms that have not yet been renovated can look dated and worn. Some reviews call the older rooms dim and tired, so ask for recent photos and request a freshly renovated room, or go for a log cabin.
- The Sai Yok location is 70 km from Kanchanaburi town, a 1.5-hour drive. If you want to see the Bridge over the River Kwai and the town markets, expect a fair bit of driving, and dining options outside the resort are limited.
- The grounds are large and rooms are spread through the forest, so the walk to the onsen, the pool, Tree Top or the restaurant can be long. Older travellers and parents with small kids should ask for a room near the facilities, or use the resort golf cart.

Insider Tips
- Ask for a log cabin in the zone near the Khwae Noi River — you open the door to the river and morning mist, rather than a resort-block room that feels like any other hotel.
- Set aside at least 2-3 hours for the Tree Top Adventure; it is more fun than it sounds and great for families, but mind the weight and height limits, and note that children under 6 cannot ride.
- Soak in the onsen in the early evening after a full day out — that is the most blissful moment of the day. Bring a small towel along, as onsen etiquette calls for.
