In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
HOSTEL WASABI Nagoya Ekimae sits on Tsubaki-cho in Nakamura, on the Taikodori (west) side of JR Nagoya — walk straight out of the station for about 500 metres, roughly 5 minutes. The building is a clean white 5-floor block with bold green WASABI lettering, done up in modern Japanese style: pale wood walls, shoji panels and washi paper lamps. Each floor has a small lobby you can sit in, which already sets it apart from the capsule places that are all bunk and nothing else. The standout here is the spread of rooms — a female-only dorm with its own women's bathroom, a mixed dorm for general backpackers, and private singles, doubles, twins and triples. Dorms start around $17 a night, and a private twin runs about $46 — a 9 sq m room with two single beds. Sheets are clean cotton, swapped for every check-in, and the quality runs a bit better than the price suggests.
Food and amenities
Every room comes with its own bathroom — bidet, a strong hot shower, slippers and basic toiletries — plus air-con and free Wi-Fi. The staff are the part guests mention most: several speak Thai, English, Chinese and Japanese, including one Thai-speaking woman who gives detailed tips on Sakae and the Osu Kannon street-food market. There's a small snack bar and deli selling Japanese food and drinks at fair prices, a shared kitchen, coin laundry, and bikes for hire at about $3.40 a day. The 5th-floor terrace is open for city views. The guest score sits at 8.4/10 from 370+ reviews — high for a hostel this close to the station.
Location and getting there
You're about 500 metres, or 5 minutes on foot, from the Taikodori (west) exit of JR Nagoya, with a Lawson on the way for snacks and drinks. The Sky Promenade observation deck at Midland Square and the Bic Camera and Yodobashi stores are right around the corner. From here it's an easy base for Sakae, Osu and Nagoya Castle, and the Shinkansen back into JR Nagoya puts Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka within reach.
Things to know before booking
There's no large bath or onsen in the building, so if you're after a soak you'll need to walk over to nearby Wellbe Meieki. The private rooms are small — around 8-10 sq m — fine for one or two people but tight for more. And the dorms share one lift across the five floors, so expect a short wait when everyone checks out in the morning.
Our take
WASABI suits solo women who want a safe female-only dorm, couples or small families after a budget private room near the station, and Asian travelers who like staff that speak their language. If you're basing yourself in Nagoya for Sakae, Osu and Nagoya Castle and want the shortest possible walk from the station, this is our number-two pick and the best value at that.
