Hotel California is a small boutique homestay of just 14 rooms that blends local Tujia and Miao art with a modern look — woven-fabric lamps, cabinets carved with flowers and dark brown wooden beds. The name may sound like the Eagles song, but inside it reads more like a little gallery than a guesthouse. Rooms run about 20 to 26 sqm, with a streaming TV loaded with Bilibili and Tencent Video, a kettle, a water filter and a small fridge. The bathroom has a strong rain shower and tea-scented local soap and shampoo. The king bed is soft and the sheets are clean and fresh — an easy room to settle into with a book.

Food and amenities

The part guests praise most is the top-floor sun terrace, where you sip tea over the city at sunset with the shape of Tianmen Mountain behind it. There is a gongfu tea room pouring Pu'er and Hunan green tea, and breakfast comes either Chinese (dim sum, congee, Hunan rice noodles) or Western (toast, fried eggs, coffee) — included in some packages or about $5 a meal otherwise. An elevator runs up and down, and there is an airport shuttle, a ticket and tour desk, free laundry and a cafe open until 22:00.

Location and getting there

The homestay sits at No. 1-21 Pengjiabu on Guanli Road in central Yongding district, about 900m from Zhangjiajie train station — an 11-minute walk, or a Didi for around $1 if you are loaded down with luggage. Lotus Airport is about 5km away, roughly 12 minutes by car, and the Tianmen Mountain cable car is a short 7 to 9 minute ride for about $2. For Wulingyuan, catch a bus from the nearby station, around 40 minutes. The location is fairly central, close to both the station and walkable local restaurants.

Things to know before booking

This is a small place — 14 rooms — so it does not carry the facilities of a full hotel. It is also not next to the Tianmen cable car, so you will need that short ride to reach it. And in high season the rooms fill up fast, so book well ahead if your dates are set.
