In-Depth Review

Rooms and decor

Hotel Emit Ueno is a mid-size 61-room hotel that deliberately parks itself between a business hotel and a boutique. The rooms lean on a modular design that makes the most of a compact 14-18 sqm — there's a work desk, a flat-screen TV and a Toto washlet in the bathroom, with crisp linens and a high dark-grey ceiling that makes the space feel bigger than the numbers suggest. The whole look runs on black, dark-brown and copper tones, and you feel that intent from the lobby on; this isn't the washed-white business box you usually get in this price bracket.

Food and amenities

The standout for us is the bar and lounge on the ground floor, open in the evening for cocktails and craft beer — come back after a day of walking and have a drink before heading up, with a DJ spinning easy music on some nights. It doesn't feel like a generic hotel bar. There's also an in-house restaurant serving breakfast (Japanese plus continental); the spread is smaller than a big chain like Sotetsu, but it fills you up. Wi-Fi is free throughout and luggage storage is free too. Note there's no fitness room on site.

Location and getting there

The location is the strong suit — 1 minute on foot to Inaricho on the Ginza Line, which runs straight to Asakusa and Shibuya. It's 7 minutes to JR Ueno and Keisei Ueno, where the Skyliner reaches Narita in 40 minutes, and a 12-minute walk to Sensoji in Asakusa — closer to the temple than anything else on this list. Real guests on Trip.com give it 8.5/10.

Things to know before booking

The rooms are small at 14-18 sqm, standard for a Japanese business hotel — fine for a couple or solo traveler, tight if you like to spread out. Breakfast has fewer options than the big chains. There's no gym. And since the Ginza Line runs underground right by the hotel, ask for a higher floor to keep the rumble out of your room.

Our take

Hotel Emit Ueno fits couples and solo travelers on a mid-range budget who want some design without paying 4-star money. Rates start around $69 a night — close to half what NOHGA next door asks. Walk over and look at both; if budget is the deciding factor, Emit is the one we'd book.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know

✓ Why we recommend it
  • Design business hotel that opened in 2018, with a deliberate black, dark-brown and copper look that you feel from the lobby on — not the usual washed-white business box.
  • There's a bar and lounge on the ground floor that opens in the evening for cocktails and craft beer, with a DJ playing easy music on some nights — a place to grab a beer before heading up to your room.
  • 1-minute walk to Inaricho on the Ginza Line, which runs straight to Asakusa and Shibuya, plus 7 minutes to JR Ueno and Keisei Ueno for the Skyliner.
  • Rooms use a modular, space-smart design with a work desk, flat-screen TV and a Toto washlet in every bathroom; a high dark-grey ceiling makes them feel bigger than the floor area suggests.
  • Rates start at roughly $69 a night — about half the price of NOHGA, which sits on the same alley a few steps away.
💡 Good to know before you book
  • Rooms are small at 14-18 sqm, typical of Japanese business hotels — fine for a couple or solo traveler, tight if you spread out.
  • The in-house breakfast (Japanese plus continental) has fewer options than a big chain like Sotetsu Fresa Inn, though it does the job.
  • There's no fitness room on site, so you'll need to go elsewhere if a gym matters to you.

Insider Tips

  • Head down to the ground-floor bar around 11 pm — that's the happy-hour window.
  • Ask for a higher floor to keep the rumble of the underground Ginza Line out of your room.
  • Walk over to NOHGA right next door and compare rates, then pick whichever fits your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Hotel Emit Ueno different from NOHGA?
NOHGA is a 4-star craft design hotel and costs more; Emit is a 3-star design business hotel at about half the price, but with more intentional styling than a typical business hotel. It's the better fit if you're on a mid-range budget and the two sit a few steps apart on the same alley.
Which station is it near?
It's a 1-minute walk to Inaricho on the Ginza Line and 7 minutes to JR Ueno / Keisei Ueno. From Keisei Ueno the Skyliner reaches Narita Airport in about 40 minutes, and Sensoji in Asakusa is a 12-minute walk.
Does it have an in-house bar?
Yes — a bar and lounge on the ground floor that opens in the evening, serving cocktails and craft beer with a DJ on some nights. It has more atmosphere than a standard hotel bar, so it's an easy spot for a drink before you head up.
