In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Rooms run to Alpine heritage style, and the appeal is that no two are quite the same. Each is filled with the building's history — Belle Epoque photographs, paintings by artists who once stayed, and old Swiss pine furniture. The Heritage Suites go furthest, each tied to a story about a past guest, while Jungfrau-facing rooms open onto balconies with a strong mountain view. Fair warning: because the place dates to 1895, some Standard rooms come in below modern size and the lift is small — guests describe it as staying inside a novel from another era rather than a slick new hotel.
Food and amenities
The restaurant turns out Swiss classics — cheese fondue, raclette, Rösti, Älplermagronen and a seasonal menu — and half-board here is good value and well reviewed. The breakfast buffet leans on local ingredients, with cheese and ham from producers in the Jungfrau Region. The signature space is the Library Bar: a book-lined room hung with historic photographs where international travellers and writers settle in over whisky or wine, and one guest put it plainly — the Library Bar is the only reason they came back. There is no spa or pool, which is the trade-off for the character.
Location and getting there
The hotel sits in the centre of Wengen, about a 6-minute walk from Wengen Bahnhof. From the station the Wengernalpbahn runs up to Kleine Scheidegg, where you change to the Jungfrau Railway for Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe; or you ride down to Lauterbrunnen. Wengen is car-free, so it stays quiet, and the Lauberhorn run — the longest World Cup ski course in the world — starts right by the village. Coming in, Zurich Airport (ZRH) is about 3 hours by train via Interlaken Ost and Lauterbrunnen.
Things to know before booking
This is an 1895 building, so set expectations accordingly: the lift is small and some Standard rooms are tighter than a modern equivalent — ask about the specific room when you book. There is no spa or pool; if you want one, look at the 4-star Beausite Park or Belvedere in the same village. And while the 6-minute walk from the station is easy enough on foot, you'll be moving your own bags through a car-free village to get there.
Our take
Hotel Falken scores 8.8/10 and starts around $223 a night, and it earns that on character rather than facilities. The Cova family still greets guests themselves, the Library Bar is genuinely worth an evening, and the restaurant does the Swiss staples right. Book it if you'd trade an indoor pool for a hotel that feels like the real, lived-in version of Wengen — and skip it if a small lift and 1895-sized rooms would bother you.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- The Cova family has run Hotel Falken since 1895, so this is real heritage, not a themed renovation — the same people still greet guests at the door.
- The Library Bar is the standout: a book-lined room with old photographs where guests linger over whisky or wine in the evening, and reviews single it out as the reason to return.
- Jungfrau-facing rooms have balconies with a strong mountain view, and the Heritage Suites each come with a story about a past guest.
- The restaurant does Swiss classics well — fondue, raclette, Rösti and Älplermagronen — and half-board is good value here.
- The breakfast buffet uses local ingredients, with cheese and ham from producers in the Jungfrau Region.
- It's an 1895 building, so the lift is small and some Standard rooms come in below modern size — worth asking about the room before you book.
- There is no spa or pool; if that matters, the 4-star Beausite Park or Belvedere in the village have indoor pools.
- It sits about a 6-minute walk from Wengen Bahnhof, which is fine on foot but means hauling bags through a car-free village from the train.

Insider Tips
- Spend an evening in the Library Bar — it's the most romantic corner of the hotel and the thing guests remember.
- Book a Heritage Suite if you can; each one carries a piece of the hotel's history rather than a standard fit-out.
- Ask the front desk for walking routes — staff point guests to trails most visitors never find.
