In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The Refurbished Twin runs 22 sqm at about $117 a night if you pick the 2022 refurbished option (an extra $10). You get fresh cream-grey wallpaper, two France Bed twins at 110x195 cm that sleep comfortably, a small desk, a 40-inch Smart TV (older than Singulari's but it works fine), a mini fridge and a kettle. The renovated bathroom is a tidy 4 sqm with a Toto Washlet and a bathtub. Skip the refurbished option and the room is noticeably older, with the original 2001 wallpaper — the refurbished version is the better value.
Food and amenities
Breakfast is downstairs at the second-floor restaurant for about $17 — the cheapest in the Official group and still 50 dishes deep, with onigiri, grilled fish, Tamagoyaki, fresh bread, drip coffee and fresh-squeezed orange juice. Kids tend to make for the curry rice and karaage. The Kintetsu Group service is a strong point: a lot of the staff are in their 30s and have been here 20-plus years, and while their English is slow the effort is high. The concierge sells the Universal Beyond Pass and Express tickets at a $3.40 discount off the gate, same as the other Official Hotels. There is no sky spa and no pool here — facilities are basic.
Location and getting there
The classic brown building sits about a 1-minute walk from the USJ gate. As an Official Hotel you get Early Park Entry 15 minutes before the public opening — handy in a busy month like October, when there can be 800 people waiting at the gate while the roughly 1,000 Official guests go in first, straight to Super Nintendo World to ride Mario Kart before the line builds. From the airport, the Limousine Bus runs direct from Kansai (KIX) in about 70 minutes for roughly $11 and stops right out front — the first drop-off in Universal City.
Things to know before booking
This is the oldest Official Hotel, so the rooms are older than the newer Singulari and Oriental towers and they look it — book a refurbished room if that matters to you. Standard rooms are 21 sqm, the smallest in this group, tied with Singulari. And there is no sky spa and no pool; if onsen or a swim is part of the plan, you will want a different Official Hotel. The flip side is price — from about $103 a night, the cheapest of the lot.
Our take
Hotel Kintetsu Universal City is the best-value pick in the Official group on price — from about $103 a night, roughly 14% under Park Front and 30% under Singulari, yet you still get Early Park Entry and the same 1-minute walk to USJ. The 8.8/10 from 1,500+ reviews backs that up. It suits families on a budget and anyone who wants an Official Hotel without paying for a sky spa or pool — just book a Refurbished Room for the best of it.
