In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The hotel has 348 modern rooms styled to match the Marunouchi business district, with floor-to-ceiling glass and a large work desk in every room — it is a business hotel at heart. Wi-Fi is free and the outlets are universal. We had a Standard Twin of 25 sqm on the east side, floor 31, and at night you can see Tokyo Skytree glowing blue and Tokyo Tower in red and gold. The whole place sits on floors 27-34 of Sapia Tower, more than 120m up.
Food and amenities
TENQOO on floor 27 is the in-house restaurant, a city-view room with a bar and lounge that serves French food and a popular afternoon tea. There is a fitness centre, but it is not free — expect around $20 a visit. Wi-Fi is free and there is a concierge. Book a Club floor room and you also get breakfast and a cocktail hour thrown in.
Location and getting there
The thing that sets this hotel apart is the underground tunnel that runs straight from the Tokyo Station Nihombashi exit. We came off the Tokaido Shinkansen at Tokyo Station, dragged a big suitcase through the tunnel to Sapia Tower in about 5 minutes, and never went outside — rain or heat made no difference. From the door it is a 0-minute walk to the Shinkansen, 5 minutes to KITTE, 8 minutes to the Imperial Palace and 10 minutes to Ginza. The N'EX runs from Tokyo Station to Narita in about 55 minutes. Trip.com guests give it 9.0.
Things to know before booking
The starting price of about $260 a night sits in the mid-to-high range, so this is not a budget room. The lobby is on floor 27, which means you ride the lift up before you check in — it can feel strange if you were picturing a normal ground-floor hotel. And the fitness centre charges extra rather than coming with the room.
Our take
Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo Marunouchi suits business travellers who ride the Shinkansen regularly, and families who want a city view at night. If this trip uses Tokyo Station as a base for hopping around Japan, this is the easiest answer there is — off the train, through the tunnel, up the lift, and you are at your door.
