Rooms and decor

The Premium Floor Twin on the 26th floor runs 27 sq m at around $117 a night, done in classic cream and brown. You get two 110x200cm twin beds with soft Simmons mattresses and a choice of four pillows — soft, medium, firm, or silk. There's a work desk with a padded chair and a 5 sq m bathroom with a separate tub, a shower, and a Toto Washlet. The bath amenities are Pierre Hermé green tea, and the window looks straight out at Mt. Hakusan, a big volcano that still holds snow on its peak into late spring. The 8-meter lobby downstairs is classic brown and gold, with a large ikebana arrangement and a glass case showing off Kanazawa gold leaf shaped into a flower.

Food and amenities

The 29th-floor Sky Lounge 'Loft' is free for guests from 06:00 to 24:00, and reviews say to head up for the 16:30 sunset — you get a 360-degree sweep of Kanazawa, Mt. Hakusan, and the Sea of Japan to the west. A glass of champagne runs about $12. For dinner you've got five restaurants to choose from. The popular pick is Iyatsuki, a Japanese kaiseki spot on the 17th floor at about $80 a head — eight courses over 90 minutes, with Jibuni (Kaga-style simmered duck) and grilled nodoguro dressed in gold leaf as the highlights. Breakfast is a buffet at The Garden House for about $23, with 80-plus items including Jibuni, Kanazawa sashimi, and gold-leaf Japanese sweets.

Location and getting there

Hotel Nikko sits on the east side (Kenrokuen-guchi), about 5 minutes closer to the station than the west-side Hyatt Centric. It's a 2-minute walk to the city's icon, the Tsuzumi Gate — a 13-meter wooden gate shaped like a Noh-theatre drum — and a 1-minute walk to the Motenashi Dome, the big glass dome in front of the station that everyone photographs. From the Tsuzumi Gate you can catch the Kanazawa Loop Bus (about $1.50) to Higashi Chaya in 10 minutes and Kenroku-en in 15. Omicho Market is 700 meters away, an 8-minute walk.

Things to know before booking

The building opened in 1994, so it's 26 years older than the Hyatt Centric and you'll notice the age in the common spaces. Rooms lean classic — comfortable brown and cream, but not the modern look of the newer openings. Weekday rates start around $109, roughly $23 more than the Mitsui Garden for a similar night, so it isn't the cheapest 4-star at the station. None of that is a dealbreaker, but go in knowing it's a reliable older tower rather than a design hotel.
