In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The hotel runs several room types, from 18-square-metre doubles up to 28-square-metre family rooms that hold four people. Rooms are clean and well kept, the beds are soft, and the Wi-Fi is fast. Nothing here is oversized — these are standard Naha city rooms — but for a base you'll mostly use to sleep, shower and drop your shopping bags, they do the job comfortably.
Food and amenities
The real draw isn't an in-house restaurant — it's what's outside the door. You step onto Kokusai-dori and into a run of souvenir shops, Okinawan restaurants, cafes and sweet stalls. In the evening we wandered out for goya champuru, taco rice and Okinawa soba, then walked straight back to the room. There's free Wi-Fi, laundry service, luggage storage, a service desk and non-smoking rooms; what there isn't is a swimming pool, so set expectations accordingly.
Location and getting there
Kokusai-dori is Naha's main shopping street, running about 1.6 kilometres and packed with shops, restaurants, cafes and snack stands — and Hotel Ocean sits right on it, so you start exploring the moment you leave the lobby. The Makishi public market for fresh fish is 450 metres away, while Makishi monorail station is only 350 metres off. That station is on the Yui Rail, Naha's single elevated line, which carries you to Shuri Castle — a UNESCO-listed site from the Ryukyu Kingdom (1429–1879) — and out to Naha Airport for just $2.
Things to know before booking
A few honest points. Kokusai-dori is lively and crowded through the day, so the street outside is rarely quiet — ask for a higher floor on the inner side to cut the late-night noise. The rooms are standard size and not especially spacious. And there's no swimming pool on site, which matters if a dip is part of your trip. None of this is a dealbreaker for a city stay, but it's worth knowing before you book.
Our take
Hotel Ocean suits families and couples who want the most walkable central location in Naha. We'd recommend it with confidence — especially if you're not renting a car and want every morning to start by walking out the door straight into the charm of Naha. It's near the Tsuboya pottery district and the Makishi public market, and we kept walking out for sushi and beni-imo purple-sweet-potato treats each night. Prices from around $69 make it good value for the address, and real guests back that up with a 9.3.
