The real highlight is the in-house Cantonese dinner restaurant; reviews say to book 2 days ahead because Taipei locals drive in for it. The signatures are crispy-skin roast duck and an old-recipe shark-fin soup, with set courses from about $57 per person — good value for the quality. Staff speak fluent English and some basic Thai, and service is soft and polite in the way you'd expect from a 5-star.

Location and getting there

The location is what we like most: it faces Beitou Park, and it's under 100 m from the lobby to MRT Xinbeitou, where the trains carry a special onsen livery. Ride 30 minutes to Taipei Main Station, then walk back to find more on your doorstep — 3 minutes to the 1913 wooden Beitou Hot Spring Museum and the Green Library, ranked among the Top 25 most beautiful libraries in the world. Carry on uphill about 800 m and you reach Thermal Valley, a sulfur pool boiling at 90°C — all walkable, no taxi needed.

Things to know before booking

The starting price, around $230 a night, is the highest on this list, so it's the splurge of the five. It's also hugely popular and books out fast in high season. Winter is the onsen peak, so reserve well ahead if that's when you're going. And if the Cantonese dinner is on your radar, don't leave the booking to the day of — the 2-day lead time is real.
