Location and getting there

The hotel sits in the Murata district, one of San Marino's nine castelli (townships), right at the foot of Monte Titano — quiet enough for a restful night, away from the tourist crowds at the top, but still a few minutes' drive up. From here it's about 5 minutes by car to the old town of San Marino City, where you can walk the winding stone streets and visit the thousand-year-old Guaita tower (Prima Torre) on its clifftop, along with the Cesta and Montale towers strung along the ridge — all UNESCO World Heritage. Drop down the SS72 highway and in about 20 minutes you reach Rimini, the Adriatic beach town with miles of white sand, good seafood and Roman remains like the Arco d'Augusto. Federico Fellini International airport is about 35 minutes away, which makes flying in, renting a car and driving up easy. For day trips, Bologna is around 1.5 hours, San Leo (a castle above the valley) about 30 minutes, and Urbino, a World Heritage town in the Marche, roughly an hour. With a car, this is an excellent base for San Marino, Emilia-Romagna and the Marche in one trip. San Marino itself is the world's oldest surviving republic, founded in 301 AD, just about 61 square kilometres and surrounded by Italy on every side.

Things to know before booking

Some honest points to weigh. First, this place is built for drivers. If you haven't rented a car, public transport from Murata up to the old town is limited, buses don't run often, and walking up the peak is too steep — if you're arriving by bus from Rimini, you'll be happier in the old town or near a bus stop. Second, it's a small boutique, so there's no pool, spa or full gym; anyone after resort facilities may feel the gap, though the trade-off is a rate far friendlier than the luxury hotels up top. Third, Murata is quiet in the evening, with few restaurants and bars open late — for a livelier dinner you'll drive up to the old town or down to Rimini, which isn't far but takes some planning around who's driving and where to park. Last, in winter (December to February) the area can get snow and the twisting roads turn slippery, so if you're coming then, rent a car with winter tyres or chains.
