In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The Sesame Family Room runs 32 sqm at about $329 a night, and the theme is everywhere the moment you open the door — wallpaper covered in Elmo, Big Bird and Cookie Monster, green-and-blue walls, four twin beds dressed in yellow-and-red linens. The bathroom has a Cookie Monster-shaped mirror, and the cups, tissues and amenities all carry the Sesame Street logo. A small Elmo doll sits on the bed as a welcome gift you can take home, and the room comes with a 43-inch Smart TV, a mini fridge and a snack box stocked with Sesame cookies and chocolate. Standard rooms are a tighter 22 sqm, and only 60 of the 428 rooms are themed at all.
Food and amenities
Breakfast is a 60-item buffet on the 2nd floor at ¥2,800 (about $19), and it leans hard into the theme: a Cookie Monster pancake to pair with chocolate chips and maple syrup, Big Bird tamagoyaki, Elmo onigiri — food art that gets picky kids to eat. Adults get a wagyu beef bowl, sushi and fresh croissants. Facilities are otherwise basic — there's a fitness room and free Wi-Fi, but no spa and no pool.
Location and getting there
Vita sits about a 6-minute walk from JR Universal City Station, following Universal City Walk and passing Universal Port — the larger sibling hotel — before you reach the USJ Main Gate roughly a minute later. The 14-floor blue-and-white tower is easy to spot: a 3-metre Elmo sits out front waving, flanked by Big Bird and Cookie Monster, with a bright blue, yellow and red lobby and several free photo spots.
Things to know before booking
The big catch is that the Sesame Street theme only lives in the 60 Sesame Rooms — book a Standard and you're in a plain 22 sqm room with theming confined to the lobby. There's no spa or pool, so the facilities are basic for the category. As a USJ Official Hotel you do get Early Park Entry 15 minutes before the public, plus a ¥500 ticket discount at the concierge, free stroller rental and a free baby crib if you book a day ahead. The Sesame Shop in the lobby sells souvenirs from ¥800 to ¥4,000, and the front desk handles English, Chinese and Korean.
Our take
Hotel Universal Port Vita is a solid pick for families whose kids prefer Sesame Street to Minions — the themed room, the Cookie Monster pancake and the Elmo welcome gift make for a memorable USJ trip. It scores 8.9/10 across 600+ reviews and starts around $110 a night for a Standard (or about $243 for a Sesame Room). Set against the $114 Universal Port next door, it's an easy-to-overlook Official Hotel that quietly matches its big sibling on quality.
