In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The Standard Double runs about 22 square metres — small and compact in the way a city hotel usually is — but it leans hard into the Ibis Styles look, with yellow, orange and blue blocked against each other for a playful effect. Floors are laminate wood-grain, and you can pick twin singles or a Queen. The bathroom is a walk-in shower with no tub, though the water pressure is good and the hot water runs straight away. There's a capsule coffee machine thrown in.
Food and amenities
Breakfast is a light spread, somewhere between European and Chinese, with 24-hour service at the desk and free Wi-Fi that's genuinely fast. None of it is fancy, but it covers what you need for a short stay. Real guest scores average around 9.1 on Trip.com — surprisingly high for a hotel at this price.
Location and getting there
Take the lift down, walk out the door, and you're on Zhongshan Road pedestrian street. Both sides are lined with Qilou colonial arcade buildings over 100 years old, and there are satay-noodle shops and fried-oyster stalls on every corner — you can stroll for a kilometre without ever stepping into the sun. The Gulangyu ferry is about 8 minutes by car, and the BRT station is only a 5-minute walk.
Things to know before booking
The rooms are small, so manage expectations on space. The pedestrian street is lively at night, which is the trade-off for being in the middle of everything — ask for a room off the street if you sleep light. And there's no tub, only a walk-in shower, if a soak matters to you.
Our take
This is the answer for shoppers, backpackers and anyone who puts location and price ahead of luxury. You open the door onto the real old town, and for us it's the best deal in the area for a budget under about $29 a night — ideal for a short 2-to-3-night trip built around walking and eating your way through Xiamen.
