This is the China-brand hotel we'll happily vouch for. JI Hotel is the mid-upper design line of Huazhu Group, leaning into a "contemporary Asian" look, and this 12-storey branch delivers it on a budget. The Superior King runs about 28 square metres and genuinely looks new because it was renovated in 2023 — beige, white and warm wood, a 1.8 m JI-branded bed, memory-foam pillows and a thick duvet. You get a 50-inch TV, a free Bluetooth speaker, a fridge, and a free minibar with two bottles of water and snacks. The bathroom uses a wet-zone layout that splits the shower from the basin, the green-tea toiletries are JI's own, the shower pressure is strong, and the room is dead silent — the soundproofing is the real surprise here.

Food and amenities

Facilities are deliberately lean. There's a small 24-hour gym with a treadmill and weights, and laundry runs a cheap $1 a piece. Breakfast costs an extra $8 a head and covers congee, mantou, Chongqing noodles and coffee — fine, not a destination. There's no pool and no full restaurant, which is the honest trade-off at this tier. What lifts it is the lobby: a Zen-styled space of pale pine and grey marble, staff in brown linen uniforms, and a hush that feels closer to a Kyoto café than a hotel beside a train station. They also hand out an English map with onward metro directions, which goes a long way if you've just landed.

Location and getting there

The whole pitch is the location. You're about 1 km from Chongqing North Railway Station (South Square) — a 13-minute step-free walk on a flat path, no stairs to drag a bag up. The metro is even closer: roughly 700 m to North Station South Square, where lines 10 and 3 carry you into Jiefangbei in about 25 minutes. That makes it close to perfect for high-speed-rail days to Chengdu, but it does mean the riverside sights — Jiefangbei, Hongyadong — are a ride away rather than a stroll, and the station district stays busy in daylight.

Things to know before booking

Set expectations to 3-star: comfortable, clean and well-designed, not full-service. There's no pool and no proper restaurant, the gym is small, and breakfast is a $8 add-on. The biggest caveat is geography — if your trip is centred on downtown nightlife and the riverfront, budget for that 25-minute metro hop each way. And while the area is convenient, it carries the foot traffic and noise of a major rail hub through the day. Book a renovated Superior King specifically; the 2023 rooms are the ones doing the heavy lifting on that 9.1 room score.
