In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The Riverview Standard runs 28 sqm with a full-wall window, a soft Queen bed, and fresh, clean-smelling linens. The bathroom has a glass-partition shower with strong water pressure and a full set of toiletries, plus a Smart TV, kettle, fridge, and a desk set by the window. The real payoff comes after dark — the red lantern light from the houses across the water stretches over the surface in long gold lines, and you can open the window and drink tea without going downstairs to fight anyone for a photo spot. Real guests scored the view 9.5 out of 10.
Food and amenities
The front-desk team is friendly, speaks basic English, and handles WeChat translate smoothly. There's a station pickup service for about $4 each way (arrange it ahead). A Chinese breakfast runs about $5.50 — mantou, congee, vegetables, eggs, and soy milk, everything you'd want. Free Wi-Fi covers the whole hotel with a strong signal, and the consistent review scores back it up: Trip 9.5 and Agoda 9.2.
Location and getting there
Jinshuian is a newer hotel on Jinjiayuan Street, on the north bank of the Tuojiang River, about 800 metres from Hongqiao Square — an easy 12-minute stroll along the riverside path. The selling point is being away from the bar strip but not away from town: open your door to the stilt houses opposite and an old wooden waterwheel on the Nanhua side. At night it goes quiet, just running water and birdsong in the morning. Walking into the Hongqiao Bridge area takes only 10–15 minutes.
Things to know before booking
There's no room right in the heart of the old town here — you walk the riverside path in, which is pleasant but does take 10–15 minutes. The amenities are more basic than a luxury 5-star; this is a solid 4-star, not a full-service resort. And rooms sell out fast in high season, so book well ahead if your dates are locked.
Our take
Jinshuian suits couples who want a romantic riverside view but still want to sleep, early risers who like wandering the town at dawn, and travelers after genuine 4-star quality without the high price — roughly $45–86 a night. We love how it manages to be quiet but not far. If you want a great night view to photograph without elbowing other tourists, book it — and ask for a 4th- or 5th-floor river-side room for the best of it.
