Katathani Phuket Beach Resort

Katathani is the whitest, quietest sand in Kata plus a big waterpark that keeps kids happy all day — it wins on beachfront location and full facilities more than on being brand new, since some buildings are older.

In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Katathani Phuket Beach Resort is a big property — 479 rooms spread across 4 buildings strung along Kata Noi beach, and the buildings are clearly different ages. Bhuri Wing is the newest, renovated in 2023, with rooms in white, grey and gold, rain showers, bathtubs and balconies looking over the garden, pools or sea. Thani Wing and Kata Wing are older, done in a contemporary Thai style. Real reviews on Trip.com (it scores 8.5/10) split neatly in two — guests in the newer wing agree the rooms are clean and smell fresh, while those in the older ones mention a damp smell and noisy air-con. The easy fix is to specify Bhuri Wing when you book, or ask to switch at check-in. Family rooms run 60 to 80 sqm, fine for two parents and two kids, and good value.
Food and amenities
The thing that makes Katathani a first choice for Thai families is the new waterpark and lazy river, finished in 2023: 3 slides, an 80 m lazy river to float along and a safe, shallow zone for small kids, open 09:00 to 18:00 and free for guests. On top of that there are 6 pools spread across the grounds, several set among big trees and gardens that guests single out. The resort runs 7 restaurants: breakfast at Sunkata is a full international buffet with Thai, Indian, fresh seafood and bakery; Harborside is the beachfront seafood spot serving fresh prawns and crab; and Fuji handles Japanese. The beachfront Sunset Bar is the best place on Kata Noi to catch the sunset. A Thai spa and a staffed kids club round it out. Overall score 8.8/10.
Location and getting there
Katathani sits right on Kata Noi beach on the south-western side of the island. The appeal is that Kata Noi is a roughly 700 m stretch of white sand that is quieter and prettier than the bigger Kata and Karon beaches next to it, because only Katathani and one or two other hotels front it. It is a 1 to 2 minute walk from your room to fine white sand and clear water, with gentle waves in the dry season (November to April) that suit swimming with kids. You can walk to the bigger Kata beach in 15 minutes (or take a tuk-tuk for about $3), where there are beachfront restaurants and massage shops. Patong is 10 km away, a 25-minute drive, and Phuket airport is 35 km, a 50-minute to one-hour drive; a transfer runs about $34 to $43.
Things to know before booking
Straight talk to help you decide. First is the building question, which you settle when you book: most of the bad reviews come from the older buildings with the damp smell and older fittings, so asking for Bhuri Wing avoids the problem outright, and the extra $14 to $29 a night is well worth it. Second is the crowding at peak: with 479 rooms, the pools and breakfast get very busy over New Year and Songkran, so travelling in the shoulder months (March or November) is far more relaxed. Third is the rainy-season surf: from May to October Kata Noi and Karon often see strong waves and rip currents, with red flags barring swimming on some days, so if you come then the resort pools are the safer call.
Our take
Katathani Phuket Beach Resort is the top family resort on Phuket. A beachfront spot on quiet, lovely Kata Noi, plus a new waterpark, 6 pools and full facilities, mean that if your trip is about kids in the water all day, an evening beach walk and plenty of food options in one place, this is the most complete pick and strong value. If you are expecting the spotless newness of a Hyatt or the design edge of The Slate, some corners will feel dated — the answer is to ask for the newer wing when you book. Overall we give it 8.8/10, best for families with kids, couples after a pretty beach, and anyone who likes a big resort with plenty to do.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- The resort sits right on Kata Noi, a roughly 700 m white-sand beach that is calmer and prettier than the busier Kata and Karon beaches next door, because only Katathani and one or two other hotels front it.
- The waterpark and lazy river, both finished in 2023, are the headline draw — 3 slides, an 80 m lazy river to float on and a shallow kids zone, open 09:00 to 18:00 and free for guests.
- There are 6 pools in total spread across the grounds, several set among big trees and gardens, so you can usually find a quieter one.
- Staff get consistent praise for being warm and genuinely helpful, with some remembering guests by name.
- The grounds are large and leafy, with mature trees giving real shade — a comfortable place to walk around in the heat.
- Some rooms smell damp, mostly in the older Thani Wing and Kata Wing, where guests also mention noisy air-con. Ask for the newer Bhuri Wing when you book, or request a switch at check-in.
- With 479 rooms, the pools and the breakfast room get crowded over New Year and Songkran. Travelling in the shoulder months (March or November) is noticeably calmer.
- In the rainy season (May to October) Kata Noi and Karon often get strong waves and rip currents, with red flags barring swimming on some days — use the resort pools instead when that happens.
