In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Kechao is a small chain done in a light-luxury style: minimalist lines, premium materials and warm lighting, aiming for 5-star rooms at a 4-star price. The Riverview Premium runs 30 sq m with corner windows on two sides — one looks at the glowing Hongqiao Bridge, the other at the bend of the Tuojiang River. You get a 1.8 m king with a pillow-top mattress and Egyptian-cotton sheets, plus a cream marble-tile bathroom with a rain shower and a separate bathtub, strong hot water and L'Occitane toiletries. The best part is after dark, when the bridge lights stretch across the water in long lines you can watch from the bed with a glass of wine.
Food and amenities
Rooms come with a 50-inch smart TV, a Nespresso machine, a mini-bar fridge, an air purifier and 100 Mbps Wi-Fi. Every day you get 2 free water bottles, local snacks and a pass to the rooftop photo spot. The buffet breakfast runs about $8 a head with Chinese and Western food, fresh fruit and brewed coffee, and room service goes until 23:00. The concierge books Miao Village tours and gondola river cruises at fair prices, and staff speak decent English.
Location and getting there
This is the strongest location on the list for walking the old town. The hotel sits at No. 2 Hongqiao East Road, right beside Hongqiao Bridge: 30 seconds on foot to the bridge, 2 minutes to Jiangtian Square (a popular photo spot, just 80 metres off), and 5 minutes to the Beimen city gate. There is a paid transfer to the Ancient City railway station for about $6 each way. The trade-off for being this central is the evening noise from the tourist streets.
Things to know before booking
You are in the busiest part of the old town, so expect lively, loud streets at night — ask for an upper floor if you sleep light. It also costs more than the guesthouses on the same lane; you are paying for the location and the 4-star rooms. And rooms sell out fast in high season, so book ahead if your dates are fixed. One more thing: this replaced the original #9 (Fenghuang Jianghu Inn), which no longer has a working booking page.
Our take
Kechao Light Luxury suits couples who want to step out the door and photograph Hongqiao Bridge, families with kids who would rather not walk far, and business travelers who need fast Wi-Fi and a full breakfast. We like it for one simple reason — no hotel sits closer to Hongqiao Bridge. If you want bridge views from the bed without the walk, book it, and pick a Riverview Premium on floors 5 or 6. Guests back it up at 9.6 on Trip and 9.3 on Agoda, prices start near $36 a night.
