In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
This is a hotel built for families who want a room wide enough for a kid's extra bed and a location that walks to everything. Majesty Plaza Shanghai is a 25-storey tower on Yan'an East Road, on the south side of People's Square, a 4-minute walk from the People's Square Metro via Exit 14. It first opened in 1995 and was last renovated in 2020, with Deluxe Family rooms starting around $87 a night. The room itself runs 42 sqm — the largest we found in Shanghai at this price — with a King, a 1.2m single bed, and a separate sitting nook with a sofa. Linens are spotless, the mattress is firm but giving, and the pillows are soft enough for kids. The beige-tiled bathroom has a rain shower and a tub big enough for a child to soak in, thick white towels, and Crabtree & Evelyn jasmine soap. The mini-fridge stocks four free water bottles, there's a coffee-and-tea maker, and Wi-Fi runs at 60 Mbps — fine for a family.
Food and amenities
The indoor pool sits on the 4th floor: 15m long, heated to a warm 29°C, with an 80cm shallow zone for small kids and hours of 6:30 to 22:00. There's a 30 sqm gym with five Life Fitness machines. Breakfast is a buffet at Cafe Royal on the 2nd floor, 6am to 10am — the kid-friendly side runs chicken congee, siu mai, BBQ pork buns, and made-to-order waffles and pancakes, with cookies and fresh juice on hand. Breakfast is included in the room rate, which makes the whole thing work out well for families.
Location and getting there
Head out the east entrance and it's 700m, or about 9 minutes, to the pedestrian stretch of Nanjing Road East, passing Raffles City mall and the Yong'an Cinema; another 600m brings you to The Bund at the HSBC building. Walk west 6 minutes and you reach People's Square, the Shanghai Museum and the park. The People's Square Metro runs Lines 1, 2 and 8, which cover the whole city — and for Shanghai Disney Resort you change to Line 11 at Xujiahui, about 70 minutes in all.
Things to know before booking
This is a 4-star, so it won't match the finish or the facilities of the nearby 5-stars — set expectations accordingly. People's Square is one of the busiest, most crowded parts of Shanghai, which is the trade-off for being this central. And in high season the rooms fill fast, so lock in your dates early.
Our take
Majesty Plaza Shanghai works best for families with young kids and groups of 3 to 4 friends who need a room wide enough for an extra bed in the People's Square district. We score it 9.3, with extra credit for the biggest room in this budget, the shallow kids' pool, and the free breakfast — the best-value family pick in the most central part of the city.
