There's a washer/dryer in the unit, and some apartments have a private balcony facing the marina. The 2-bedroom layout that sleeps four is the popular one; reviews mention sitting out on the balcony in the evening watching yachts run their lights in and out. It's a different feel from Coral Sea Resort, which faces the open sea — here you look out over the marina, with yachts as the view from your front door.

Food and amenities

The hotel has a big lagoon-style pool set in a tropical garden, plus an outdoor jacuzzi, a shared BBQ area, free underground parking, and free Wi-Fi throughout. The full kitchens are the real draw for longer stays — you can cook in and skip a few restaurant bills — which is why we point families and groups who are staying several nights this way.

Location and getting there

Mantra Boathouse Apartments is a 4.5-star Mantra (Accor) property on Port Drive, inside the Port of Airlie marina. We drove straight in from Whitsunday Coast Airport, turned onto the bridge over Port Drive, and were at the hotel in a few minutes. What makes it stand out is being right inside the marina — walk out the lobby and you're at the pontoons for Whitsunday Bluepearl, Cruise Whitsundays, and Ocean Rafting, all of which leave Port of Airlie each morning. From the hotel it's about a 7-minute walk across the Port Drive footbridge to Main Street and the free public Airlie Beach Lagoon.

Things to know before booking

This is the highest starting rate in our list at around $220 a night, and it fills up fast in the dry season, so book early. It's also about 700m from Main Street and the Airlie Beach Lagoon, which puts it farther out than Whitsunday on the Beach.
