The Riverside Deluxe is a 26-square-metre room with a wooden balcony cantilevered out over the river — guests say you can sip your morning coffee with your feet dangling above the water. The Queen bed is soft, dressed in 100% cotton sheets, and the bathroom is new, finished in black tile with a rain shower, strong hot water and tea-leaf toiletries. The look mixes old timber — columns and beams — with Nordic minimalist furniture, a balance that is genuinely hard to pull off. You also get a Smart TV, a kettle, fast Wi-Fi, new air-con and a small fridge stocked with 2 free bottles of water a day. Pets are welcome for about $6 a night.

Food and amenities

The thing that earns the 9.9 is not the room — it is the homemade breakfast. The owner is a Fenghuang aunt who cooks well, and breakfast runs about $4 a head: brown-rice congee, hot mantou buns, pan eggs, Miao pickled vegetables, fresh soy milk, tiaojiaolou rice noodles and a family-recipe blood tofu — punchy flavors a Thai palate takes to easily. Location and getting there

Melody Inn sits at Huilongge on a bend of the Tuojiang River, east of the old town — a stretch tourists barely know, and far calmer than the Beimen side. It is genuinely on the water, not merely near it: open your door and the river is right there, with gondola boats sliding past close by and mornings quiet enough to hear the fish nibble. It is a 12-minute walk from Hongqiao Square — far enough that no crowds pass your door, close enough to wander back into town with ease.

Things to know before booking

The rooms are simple guesthouse-style — comfortable and well kept, but this is not a hotel with a big lobby or full facilities. Because it sits at the edge of the old town, you walk in to reach the main tourist lanes and riverside sights. And it fills up fast in high season, so lock in your dates early if they are fixed. None of these are dealbreakers — they are just the trade for a quiet, water's-edge room run by one family.
