In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Picture a hotel in a quiet pocket of Kampala, on Mbogo Road, set about 3 km back from the noise of the center — that's Mestil Hotel & Residences. The building is Mediterranean in style, painted in warm earth tones of cream and soft yellow, broken up with arched doorways that nod to seaside houses in southern Europe. Step into the lobby and you get high open ceilings, wrought-iron chandeliers, brown-toned patterned tile floors, and seating corners arranged more like a private villa than a chain hotel. The first feeling is calm and warm — no roar of capital-city traffic, no heavy synthetic scent, just soft piano from the bar corner and the smell of coffee drifting over from Mediterraneo next door. The 124 rooms are laid out so every floor gets a balcony and an opening that catches the cool air of the Ugandan highlands — Kampala sits at around 1,200 metres, which keeps the weather pleasant year-round, and the hotel uses that smartly.
Food and amenities
The rooms are what bring people back. They average 35 to 45 sq m, clearly bigger than most 4-star rooms in the city, with floor-to-ceiling windows opening to the city or the inner garden and a private balcony on nearly every one for stepping out into the morning air. Beds are soft kings with crisp white linens and a choice of pillows, plus a desk sized right for answering emails. Bathrooms run beige-cream tile, with rain showers and a tub in the suites, and the olive-scented Mediterranean toiletries match the theme. The top floor holds the standout Sanaar Spa — a 360-degree view of Kampala through glass walls on every side, taking in Tank Hill, the Kololo rise and the red-brown rooftops of the capital out to the horizon. There are couple treatment rooms, a sauna, a steam room and a lounge with herbal tea, and reviewers widely call the massages and the calm here the best in the city. Down at ground level is a long outdoor pool ringed by a wooden deck and loungers, good for an afternoon soak, a fully Technogym-fitted gym, and Mediterraneo, serving Ugandan dishes like matoke and posho alongside Mediterranean plates such as fresh pasta and grilled seafood.
Location and getting there
Mestil's spot in Nsambya is a deliberate choice — about 3 km back from the crowded, traffic-clogged center of Kampala, an easy 10 to 15-minute drive. The district is home to several embassies, NGO offices and expat residences, so it stays calm, safe and well kept. A few minutes' walk gets you to Game Stores, one of Uganda's big retailers, and Quality Mall with a supermarket and small restaurants. Getting into town is easy by hotel taxi, the SafeBoda app (motorbike taxis safer than the usual boda-boda), or Uber and Bolt, both of which cover the whole city. Entebbe International Airport is about 45 km away, a 60 to 75-minute trip depending on traffic. If you're a business traveler in town for meetings, or using Kampala as a base before heading off to the wildlife parks, this works well — quiet enough to sleep, close enough to dip into the city when you want.
Things to know before booking
Straight talk to make the call easier. First, the location is outside the center: it's quiet and safe, but if you plan to wander the restaurants and cafes of Kololo, Acacia Avenue, or shop at Garden City, you'll be relying on a taxi or boda-boda almost every time, so budget for that. The hotel's own cars are convenient but cost more than the going rate — compare against SafeBoda or Bolt first. Second, the breakfast buffet is solid and covers both Western and some local food, but the options stay much the same daily and can feel repetitive over several nights; some reviewers want more variety of local Ugandan dishes. Third, Wi-Fi on the upper floors can be patchy at times, especially in the evening when many guests are online at once — for an important video call, test it first or use the more stable lobby signal. Last, the pool is outdoor with no roof, so in the rainy seasons (March to May and October to November) you may get less use out of it than you'd hope — keep the spa as a backup plan.
Our take
After reading through hundreds of real reviews, Mestil Hotel & Residences is a 4-star that feels more like a boutique at a 5-star price point — big rooms, tasteful design, the genuinely lovely 360-degree Sanaar Spa, warm Ugandan service, and rates about 37% below the city's 4-star average. If you're a couple after a quiet, romantic trip in Uganda, a business traveler who wants a clean, roomy bed with a proper desk, or a traveler using Kampala as a base before gorilla trekking at Bwindi or a safari at Murchison Falls, this is a very neat fit. But if you want to walk to the city's restaurants and markets without flagging a ride every time, this out-of-center location may not be the answer. Overall we give it 8.7/10 — best for couples, business travelers and budget luxury seekers who want a calm setting, good rooms, and top-tier value in Kampala.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- Rooms run a generous 35 to 45 sq m, clearly bigger than most 4-star rooms in Kampala, with tall windows and a private balcony on nearly every one for full daylight.
- The top-floor Sanaar Spa opens onto a 360-degree view of Kampala, with couple treatment rooms, a sauna and a steam room. Reviewers rate the massages highly and call it the most relaxing spot in the city.
- Cleanliness is the one thing reviews agree on across the board — rooms, bathrooms and common areas are meticulously kept, with many guests calling it the cleanest place they've stayed in Kampala.
- Rates start around $126 a night, roughly 37% below the city's 4-star average, and still include the full set: outdoor pool, Technogym gym, spa and a buffet breakfast.
- Service is genuinely Ugandan — warm, smiling and attentive to small details. Plenty of reviews mention the front-of-house staff remembering guests' names and hustling to flag down taxis.
- The location in Nsambya is calm and safe but sits about 3 km from central Kampala. There's no train, so you'll be relying on a taxi or a boda-boda to reach town or most restaurants.
- The breakfast buffet is solid but the choices stay much the same every day. Over several nights it can start to feel repetitive — some reviewers wish for a wider range of local Ugandan dishes.
- Wi-Fi on the upper floors can wobble at times, especially in the evening when a lot of guests are online at once. If you have an important video call, test it first or head down to the lobby.

Insider Tips
- Ask for a room on floor 5 or above facing the city — you get the widest Kampala view and far prettier golden morning light than the inward garden side.
- Book a Sanaar Spa treatment for the evening just before sunset, so you get a massage while the light shifts and colors the city — the best atmosphere of the day.
- Budget for taxis or use the SafeBoda app to get into town. The hotel's own cars cost more than the going rate, so if you're heading out for dinner in Kololo or on Acacia Avenue, compare prices first.
