In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
MF Hotel Penghu is a 4-star where rates start at roughly $51 a night — genuinely good value for Penghu. The building sits on Minquan Road in the old town, an easy walk from Magong harbour. The lobby is plain but clean and the staff are friendly. Our Sea View room (NT$1,650, about $53) ran around 25 sqm — not large, but well laid out, with a comfortable bed and a small desk and seating nook. The bit we liked most was the bathroom: it had a soaking tub to sink into after a full day of walking. Hot water ran strong, the toiletries were complete, and our room caught a partial sea view. Soundproofing was okay and the air-con cooled fast. For this price, the room punches above its tier.
Food and amenities
Breakfast is a compact buffet — Taiwanese staples like congee, stir-fried vegetables and eggs, plus the basics of bread, fruit and coffee. It's not fancy, but it fills you up and tastes fine. There's a small gym to use and the Wi-Fi is fast enough to actually work on. There is no swimming pool, which is normal for a budget hotel here; if a pool matters to you, you'll need one of the 5-star options. On overall value, though, this place does very well.
Location and getting there
You're in the old town, a 5–7 minute walk from Magong harbour and the island-hopping boats, and not far from Central Old Street, Tianhou Temple and the shopping street. The streets around the hotel are full of local seafood spots — ask the front desk for a steer. Penghu Airport is about a 12–15 minute drive. To get around the island, renting a scooter or a car is the way to go.
Things to know before booking
There's no pool — that's the trade-off at this price, so go 5-star if you need one. Standard rooms are sized for two and not especially roomy. And because it's a small, well-priced property in a popular spot, rooms fill quickly in high season and during the fireworks festival — reserve ahead. Note too that not every room has a soaking tub, so ask for one specifically if that's why you're booking.
Our take
MF Hotel Penghu suits budget-minded families and couples who want a 4-star room with a view or a soaking tub in the old town, scoring 8.5/10 from real guests — the best value of this group. If you care about value and being close to the harbour, this is the one we'd point you to when the budget is tight but you still want quality.
