In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Nara Royal Hotel is a 4-star in the Hokkeji district, near the Heijo Palace ruins — a 130-hectare open field that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The 10-storey cream-and-brown block opened in 1986: not new, but well kept. The lobby is wide, with cream marble floors, dark-brown sofas and a Hinoki-wood check-in counter, and staff speak English and Chinese. A Twin Western room runs ¥16,000 a night (about $109) with buffet breakfast, measures 22 sq m, and comes in cream and pale green with two 110×195 cm beds, a 32-inch Sony TV, free Wi-Fi, and a yukata for the onsen. The bathroom is a standard Japanese unit with a tub, shower and Toto Washlet. Ask for floor 8 — the view over the Heijo Palace ruins and the green fields is lovely in the morning.
Food and amenities
Dinner options span four restaurants. The Western Hokuto serves a set course at ¥4,800 (about $33) with Yamato pork sirloin, foie gras and soufflé; the Japanese Hagi does kaiseki at ¥6,500 (about $44); the Chinese Kacho handles dim sum; and Garden View is the buffet at ¥3,800 (about $26). The breakfast buffet, included in the rate, runs 06:30–09:30 with 50+ items — Yamato pork sausage, miso soup, and Nara's local kaki-no-ha persimmon-leaf sushi.
Location and getting there
The hotel sits 5 km from JR Nara, so the free shuttle does the heavy lifting. It runs three routes: Nara Park (Todai-ji, Kofuku-ji and Kasuga Taisha) hourly 09:00–18:00; JR Nara every 30 minutes 06:30–22:00; and the Heijo Palace ruins every two hours. The Heijo Palace run takes about 7 minutes. The palace itself is free, opens 09:00–16:30, and lets you walk the 1.2 km from the Suzakumon Gate to the reconstructed Daigokuden Hall across the largest imperial palace grounds in Japan, dating to 710–784 AD.
Things to know before booking
Being 5 km out means you are tied to the shuttle — it is too far to walk into town, so plan around the timetable. The 1986 building shows its age next to the city's newer hotels, even if it is clean and maintained. And it leans heavily on Chinese and Korean tour groups, which makes the lobby noisy in the evening. The three hot springs are free for guests; the bedrock spa is the one paid extra at about $10 an hour.
Our take
Nara Royal is the best-value 4-star in Nara. You get a free shuttle around the city, three hot springs (a magnesium-salt indoor spring at 42°C, a bedrock spa, and a sauna with a 16°C cold pool), four restaurants, and the Heijo Palace UNESCO site close by — all from about $109 a night with breakfast. The 9.1/10 score across 5,500+ reviews backs it up. It is the right pick for families on a budget, tour groups, shuttle-reliant travelers, and anyone who wants to see Heijo Palace.
