In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The New Otani Inn Yokohama Premium connects straight to JR Sakuragicho Station without stepping outside — from Tokyo Station it is about 30 minutes on the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line, then roughly a 1-minute walk through the underground to the lobby. The mid-sized lobby runs to the New Otani classic look in brown, cream and gold. The Bay View Premium corner room on the 12th floor goes for $150 a night (around $150) and measures 28 sqm — a corner unit with windows on two sides. The east side looks onto Cosmo Clock 21, Yokohama Bay and the 296m Landmark Tower; on a clear morning the west side catches Mt. Fuji sitting out on the horizon, 90 km away. The room is clean and fresh in brown and beige, with a Queen bed (160x200 cm), a sofa and a work desk. The 4 sqm bathroom is small in the Japanese way, with a combined tub and shower and a Toto Washlet. At $150 it is strong value against the 5-star bay-view rooms that open at $238+.
Food and amenities
A lot of guests skip dinner at the hotel and walk 7 minutes to Minato Mirai for Bills Yokohama, the Japanese branch of Sydney's Bills, where the ricotta pancakes at $12 are the headliner and the steak runs $31 in a casual room. Breakfast is at Le Provence in the hotel — a $16 buffet (around $16) that earns its keep, with Japanese plates (miso soup, grilled salmon, raw egg) alongside Western options (croissants, bacon, egg) and fresh fruit, and a chef making omelettes to order. The dining room seats 100 and rarely feels crowded. For lunch, Yokohama Chinatown is 1 JR stop plus an 8-minute walk away — go for the Peking duck at Manchinrou.
Location and getting there
On day two you can walk 7 minutes to Cosmo Clock 21, the Cup Noodles Museum and the Red Brick Warehouse and cover all three in a day. The 2021 addition is the Yokohama Air Cabin, the cable car running the 630 metres between Sakuragicho and Unga Park in 5 minutes at $10 a ride (around $10), with a unique angle on Minato Mirai — its Sakuragicho station is a 5-minute walk from the hotel. From there it is a 12-minute walk to Nippon Maru Memorial Park, where you can board the Meiji-era sailing ship for $5 and see the cabins and engine room.
Things to know before booking
The standard rooms start at 22 sqm, small by Japanese standards — the 4-star opens at 22 where the 5-stars start at 30-plus. This is the 4-star sub-brand, not the flagship 5-star New Otani Hotel in Tokyo Akasaka, so set expectations to value-and-view rather than full luxury. There is no indoor pool and no spa. And the Mt. Fuji view is real but conditional: west side, floor 8 and up, mostly November to February, with about a 60% chance on any given day.
Our take
The New Otani Inn Yokohama Premium is the best-value pick in the Minato Mirai group — a 1-minute walk from Sakuragicho, a Bay View Premium room that catches both Cosmo Clock and Mt. Fuji, and rates of $129–150 (around $129-150) that come in at half the price of the 5-star bay-view rooms. It scores 8.8/10 across 284+ reviews, and it fits families and couples on a budget who still want the bay, backpackers after a Minato Mirai base, and solo travelers alike.
