In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Nine Hours Shinjuku-North takes design more seriously than any capsule hotel around Shinjuku. The 206 capsules were styled by Fumie Shibata, a product designer who has worked for Panasonic and Sony, and it shows — everything here exists to help you sleep efficiently, with nothing extra and nothing in the way. Each capsule is sized right for sleeping and sitting up, with an adjustable reading light, a fast-charging USB port and a curtain that blocks light well. Air conditioning is set per unit, and the lockers sit in a changing area separate from the capsules, so other guests rarely pass your pod — a real win for privacy. Guests note that mid-floor capsules feel quietest and coolest, since the lower floors catch a little hallway light and the upper floors run warmer in summer.
Food and amenities
The gender-separated shared showers are the part reviewers praise most — spotless, with strong hot water all night. Toiletries, soap, shampoo, towels and pyjamas come included, and there are hair dryers, vending machines and a vanity area. Free Wi-Fi covers the whole building, coin laundry is on site, and the desk will hold your bags before or after your stay.
Location and getting there
It sits just 2 minutes from Shin-Okubo Station on the JR Yamanote Line, which runs one stop up to Shinjuku and on to Harajuku and Shibuya, or down toward Ikebukuro. The surrounding blocks are Tokyo's Koreatown, full of Korean restaurants and late-night supermarkets — a livelier, slightly different feel from central Shinjuku. By train, Shibuya is 15 minutes, with Akihabara and Ueno each about 20 minutes.
Things to know before booking
This is the mixed/men's branch — women should book the separate Nine Hours Woman Shinjuku location instead. There's no private bathroom; everything is shared, and the capsules close with a curtain rather than a door, so light sleepers may catch some noise. Guests under 18 are not accepted. Check-in is at 14:00 and check-out at 10:00.
Our take
Nine Hours Shinjuku-North is the easy pick for solo travelers, backpackers and anyone who wants a genuine Japanese capsule experience without overpaying. Its strengths are the cleanliness, the thought put into the design and a location right next to Shinjuku. If you want to keep it cheap but still feel fully Japanese, this is the answer.

Insider Tips
- Aim to arrive by 22:00, and ask for a mid-floor capsule — they run cooler and quieter than the lower floors.
- Use the Nine Hours app to check in ahead of time and skip the wait at the counter.
- Shin-Okubo is Tokyo's Koreatown, so plenty of Korean restaurants stay open late right outside the door.
