In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Onyado Nono Nara is a modern Dormy Inn ryokan, a 3-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station through the covered Higashimuki Shopping Arcade — about the handiest spot in town. The entrance is traditional hinoki cypress, and you swap your shoes for a locker and cream cotton slippers on the way in, ryokan-style. The Tatami Twin runs ¥20,000 (around $135) for 14 sq m — small by modern ryokan standards but cleverly laid out, with fresh tatami, two premium futons, a low chabudai table, and faintly cypress-scented shoji screens. You get a 32-inch Panasonic TV, free Wi-Fi, a kettle, free matcha, and a cherry-blossom yukata. The 4 sq m unit bathroom has a Toto Washlet and Pola amenities — small, but it covers the basics, and the room is dead quiet for somewhere this central.
Food and amenities
The headline is the food that comes free. At 21:30, head to the 1st-floor dining room for Yonaki Soba — a thin-noodle shoyu ramen in chicken broth with chashu pork, scallions and an onsen egg, free for every guest. It is capped at 200 bowls, so anyone who has stayed at a Dormy Inn knows to go before 22:30. The Japanese breakfast buffet (¥1,800, included in the rate) runs over 30 dishes, including Nara's own Kaki-no-ha sushi — sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves — and Yamato pork sausage.
Location and getting there
You are 3 minutes on foot from Kintetsu Nara Station and about 12 minutes from JR Nara, sitting right on the covered Higashimuki Shopping Arcade. That makes it the easiest base if you are arriving from Kyoto or Osaka. The trade-off is Nara Park — it is 1 km away, roughly a 10-minute walk, so the deer and Todai-ji are not right outside the door.
Things to know before booking
The big one is the onsen. Tenku no Yu sits on the 9th floor with separate men's and women's baths — two indoor baths (the original hot spring plus a mineral bath), an outdoor bath looking at Wakakusa Mountain and the roof of Todai-ji, a sauna and a cold pool. The water comes 60 km from Yoshinoyama and is heavy on magnesium and salt. The catch: it is only open 15:00–02:00 and 05:00–10:00, closed 10:00–15:00 for cleaning, so no midday soak. And the tatami rooms are genuinely small at 14 sq m — if you would rather not be on a futon, ask for the 24 sq m Western Twin, which costs the same.
Our take
Onyado Nono Nara Natural Hot Spring is the best-value modern ryokan in Nara for anyone who loves an onsen and wants to keep the bill down. The natural rooftop bath, the free Yonaki Soba, real tatami and a yukata, and a 3-minute walk to Kintetsu Nara add up fast. The 9.5/10 score from 4,500+ reviews backs up the Dormy Inn brand, and at around $135 a night with breakfast it is an easy pick for budget-minded couples, solo travelers, and day-trippers coming over from Kyoto or Osaka.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- The Tenku no Yu rooftop onsen is a genuine natural hot spring with an outdoor bath looking out at Wakakusa Mountain and the roof of Todai-ji.
- Free Yonaki Soba ramen is served to every guest after 21:30 — a beloved late-night snack and a Dormy Inn signature.
- It is a 3-minute walk to Kintetsu Nara Station, which makes it the easiest base if you are coming in from Kyoto or Osaka.
- Real tatami rooms come with futons and a free yukata, so you get the ryokan experience in a modern package.
- The public baths run on real Yoshinoyama hot-spring water, trucked in 60 km from the mountains.
- The tatami rooms are small at 14 sq m, and once the futons are laid out they fill the whole floor.
- It is 1 km from Nara Park — about a 10-minute walk — so the deer and Todai-ji are not right on the doorstep.
- The onsen only runs 15:00–02:00 and 05:00–10:00; it closes 10:00–15:00 for cleaning, so a midday soak is out.

- Tenku no Yu is on the 9th floor with an outdoor bath, open 15:00–02:00 and again 05:00–10:00 — go up around 6 AM for the sunrise soak.
- If you would rather not sleep on a futon, ask for the 24 sq m Western Twin instead of the tatami room — it costs the same.
