In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Oriental Hotel Universal City is a 16-floor tower in brown and soft green, a short walk from JR Universal City Station, and it pulls a review score of about 9.2/10. What sets it apart from the other hotels around here is the eco feel — the lobby smells of fresh wood mixed with real plants and a 6-metre living green wall, and staff in green-and-cream uniforms that read more eco-resort than city hotel. The Superior Twin runs 24 sqm, with cream-and-green walls and natural oak furniture, two 110×195cm twin beds, Simmons mattresses and all-duck-down pillows. The 50-inch Sharp 4K Smart TV pairs over Bluetooth and AirPlay on the spot — mirror an iPhone and run Spotify through the room speaker. The desk has USB-C, USB-A and HDMI ports, the mini-fridge holds free water and Earl Grey, and the unit bathroom is finished in marble tone with Cosme Kitchen Japanese organic amenities.
Food and amenities
Come August, the outdoor pool is open — 25 metres long and 1.2 metres deep, with very clear water and a separate 0.6-metre kids' pool alongside. It runs 10:00 to 20:00 and is free for guests, with deck chairs and towels thrown in; around 7pm the sunset throws orange light across the water. After a swim, Asobi Beer on the level-1 terrace pours 12 craft beers at about $5 a glass plus tapas, with string lights and a chilled-out outdoor mood. The hotel also runs a real sustainability program — bamboo toothbrushes, refillable amenity bottles, LED throughout, and recycling collection for guests who want to sort their waste.
Location and getting there
It's a 4-minute walk from the hotel to the USJ main gate through the Universal CityWalk shopping strip — closer than Universal Port at 5 minutes, though further out than Park Front at 1 minute. From Shin-Osaka you reach it on the Loop Line in about 12 minutes. As an Official Hotel it gets Early Park Entry 15 minutes before the public opening, plus discounted park tickets at the concierge. Staff speak some English, but Google Translate handles the gaps fine.
Things to know before booking
The big catch is the pool: it's open only in summer, July 1 to September 10, and closed every other season, so book off-season and you lose one of the main reasons to choose here. Standard rooms start around $129, a little more than Park Front at about $120, even though you're slightly further from the gate. And at 24 sqm the standard rooms are about average for the area — newer, but not bigger than the rivals.
Our take
Oriental Hotel Universal City is the newest pick for couples and families who want fresh facilities, an outdoor pool (open Jul to Sep) and a sustainability-minded design. The 9.2/10 from 1,458 reviews backs the quality, and at a 1-minute walk from the station and 4 minutes from USJ it's closer in than Universal Port or Singulari. Rooms from about $129 a night are a good deal in summer when the pool is running — the safest, newest option of the Official group.
