In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Penghu Bay Resort is unlike any other stay on Penghu — a resort built around the old military village in Juguang, about 8 minutes by car out of Magong. The mood is a world away from town: quiet, shaded, with rows of old village-style buildings, the kind of place you book when you want somewhere with character. It pulls a guest score of about 8.5/10 from real stays. The Deluxe room runs NT$3,500 (around $111/night) and is about 28 sqm, decorated with a blend of old-village feel and modern-hotel comfort — a soft bed and a small sitting nook. The bathroom is clean, the hot water is strong, and amenities are all there. The thing we liked most was the silence: at night there's barely a sound, and you can open the window to the sea breeze and sleep deeply.
Food and amenities
Breakfast comes as a set plus a small buffet, leaning local Taiwanese with the basics covered — homely, tasty cooking eaten out in a shady garden. The highlight of the property is the free bikes: we borrowed a pair and rode around Juguang Village and the shoreline in the cool of the morning, with the old buildings looking their best for photos. There's garden space to sit out in and working Wi-Fi. There is no pool here, so if that matters, the 5-star options in town are the ones to look at.
Location and getting there
The hotel is out in the Juguang area rather than in town — it's about 5-10 minutes by car into central Magong, with the harbour and old town roughly the same distance. We'd strongly suggest renting a car or scooter, which makes seeing the city and circling the island far easier from this base. Restaurants and convenience stores right around the hotel are thin on the ground, so it pays to buy snacks and water in town before you head out.
Things to know before booking
This is a stay that commits to quiet, which is exactly the point — but it means you trade convenience for calm. You are not walking to dinner or a 7-Eleven; you'll be driving. The buildings lean into the heritage village theme rather than slick resort polish, and there's no swimming pool. If you want the energy of the city on your doorstep, this isn't your base. If you want to switch off properly, it's a strong pick.
Our take
Penghu Bay Resort suits couples and families after a stay with real character — one that values quiet and the old-village atmosphere over the bustle of town. With a score of 8.5/10, it's a clearly different experience from the in-town hotels. Bring a rental car, lean into the calm, and it's a genuinely interesting place to spend a few nights on Penghu.
