In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Rainbow Hotel sits right in the heart of Magong's old town, on Minsu Road, just a few steps from Tianhou Temple, so you can step out the door and start exploring the old quarter on foot. The lobby is small but warmly styled and modern, and reviewers repeatedly mention how friendly the staff are, happy to point you toward nearby sights. The first thing you notice is that the place really is new: everything still looks spotless, in keeping with a hotel that only opened in 2018. The Standard Double runs about 26 sq m in white-and-wood tones that feel easy on the eyes, with a comfortable bed, a desk and a small seating corner. The bathroom is clean with a strong shower and the full set of toiletries, and while the room is not huge, it is well laid out and never feels cramped. For this price, the rooms look better than you would expect.
Food and amenities
Breakfast is a buffet that left a real impression. It runs Taiwanese plates like congee, stir-fried vegetables and eggs alongside Western options such as bread, sausage, fruit and coffee, and it is surprisingly varied for a small hotel; everything is tasty and you can go back for more. There is a small gym, and the Wi-Fi is genuinely fast. The one thing to flag is that there is no pool; if that matters to you, this is where the 5-star options earn their premium. On value, though, Rainbow does very well.
Location and getting there
Location is the clearest selling point. It is a 3-5 minute walk to the Central Old Street quarter, Tianhou Temple and the shopping street, so heading out for local food in the evening is effortless. Magong harbour, the jumping-off point for island-hopping boats, is about a 7-10 minute walk, and Penghu Airport is roughly 12-15 minutes by car. To get around the rest of the island, renting a scooter is the way to go; ask reception, who tend to recommend a nearby shop with good rates.
Things to know before booking
Three things to keep in mind. There is no pool, so if you want one you will need Discovery Hotel or Four Points by Sheraton instead. On-site parking is limited, so in high season it is worth confirming a spot when you book. And because this is a small property, rooms fill up fast around the fireworks festival and other peak dates, so reserve early.
Our take
Rainbow Hotel suits couples and families who want a fresh, well-designed room in the middle of the old town without paying 5-star money. The 8.6/10 score lines up with what you get: the room quality and the breakfast make this strong value from $77 a night. If you do not need a pool, this is the boutique we would point you to as the best-value choice in the 4-star group.
